The summer grows late, cool, ragged, precious. Clouds like ungainly brooms are sweeping showers across the slates ... — ‘A Crow’ by #EdwinMorgan, published in Sweeping Out the Dark (Carcanet, 1994)

A Crow The summer grows late, cool, ragged, precious. Clouds like ungainly brooms are sweeping showers across the slates. On a dripping lamp-standard a crow hunches, flaps, hunches. The young painter with his ring of white sings as he hops in and out of the rain. The sun bursts what it has been saving so suddenly, so brilliantly, we are smiling. It is August still. The leaves hang fast and glisten. If there were no seasons, who would be singing? If there was no weather, who would be painting? If there was no earth turning, we darkly, partly think, no crow would have a lawn to stamp on or Aristarchus any globe to dandle. As not to be born is worst – a crow will tell you, a worm will tell you – not to be created crosses galaxies like a shadow of horror. But created they are; born, I and the painter; really wet ruffled shiny black half-happy the feathers of the raucous-hearted clatterer.

Anyone fancy Max Bygraves’s 1977 novel The Milkman’s On His Way? #readalongaMax

Cover of the novel, showing a caricature of a man who looks very like Max Bygraves driving a milk float and being pursued by a scantily clad young woman Back cover. Lots of other young women also pursuing him. Text: “READALONGAMAX... Harry Selfridge, a milkman from Battersea with a nice smile and a fine set of vocal chords, was a true overnight sensation. He made it from singsongs down the club on Saturday nights to superstardom and a season in Las Vegas before you could say 'Opportunity Knocks' The success went straight to his head - and his manager's pocket. Soon the showbiz sharks and their Mafia connections were laughing all the way to their tax havens, while Harry was pining for his Battersea pintas and Eileen, his dairy queen who no number of groupies could replace. But business is business for the Mafia, and Harry found getting back to the bottom far harder than getting up to the top!”

Loved this. The only one I already knew was ‘In the Days Before Rock ‘n’ Roll’. And I had no idea about the contractual obligation album!

Still haunted by the time people on twitter said I was racist and trying to get black people killed by cops because I said you don't need to carry your driving licence when driving. In the UK. Where I live. And where you don't need to carry your driving licence while driving.

It’s cheese here too and I actually thought that’s what all the social media about Cracker Barrel was about…

That might work! I didn't think of that, oddly. Probably worth a shot!

It feels a bit dramatic to log out of iCloud - lots of warnings etc - but it was fine for me (once I remembered my password!), though I did need to set up Apple Pay again when I logged back in.

As long as they come on perforated paper. SRSLY THO, always interesting to see which authors add acknowledgements/author's notes and which don't. There's a generational divide I think but it's not quite as clear cut as that.

Yeah this happened to me. But it wasn't enough just to de-select the Times app from iCloud backups - I had to log out of iCloud on my phone and then log back in, and THEN de-select the Times app. It's been fine since. (Mine hadn't backed up since April either so maybe some Times update screwed it.)
