Yeah this happened to me. But it wasn't enough just to de-select the Times app from iCloud backups - I had to log out of iCloud on my phone and then log back in, and THEN de-select the Times app. It's been fine since. (Mine hadn't backed up since April either so maybe some Times update screwed it.)
