She plans to live with her maternal g'parents. Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Honduras has a nursing program at several campuses; tuition is $360/yr (?!) and her GFM is at $39,000. Would be nice if someone could get her connected to continue her education there with little friction or time gap.

I appreciate your round-up of favorites! In thanks, I'd like to share with you one of mine: Deborah Madison's coconut curry with tofu and lime. Rich, fresh, colorful, and easy.

No bran cereal? 🙂Fortune had a very alarming article yesterday, I wonder if you're hearing the same:

Headline: '‘It’s like when you see the tsunami coming in’: Agricultural economists are sounding the alarm about produce prices doubling'. From https://fortune.com/2025/08/28/tsunami-inflation-grocery-prices-tariffs-deportation-trump/ Excerpt: 'The first wave of grocery-price increases will likely hit this winter. Roberson predicted produce prices could rise 50% to 100% by early next year as inventories clear and new contracts kick in. And unlike past decades, when Washington would quietly ease border enforcement to keep fields staffed, today’s political environment suggests no such check.'

Horizontal slats of metal painted white and red make a border wall. One man sits with his back to the wall, while a younger person has removed a corner of the slats in the upper-left corner, revealing a dark blue sky with white fireworks and a golden city in the horizon. The caption read: 'Felipe Galindo’s illustration “4th of July from the south border” was referenced in the White House’s list of Smithsonian exhibitions it found to be objectionable.'

Did you see this part of the quote-skeet?

'How This Differs From Our Approach in Other Places Mississippi’s new law and the UK’s Online Safety Act (OSA) are very different. Bluesky follows the OSA in the UK. There, Bluesky is still accessible for everyone, age checks are required only for accessing certain content and features, and Bluesky does not know and does not track which UK users are under 18. Mississippi’s law, by contrast, would block everyone from accessing the site—teens and adults—unless they hand over sensitive information, and once they do, the law in Mississippi requires Bluesky to keep track of which users are children.'

I think it might be 2 sleeves (I don't know the word for it/them) - a puffed/ruched short sleeve plus a (detachable? basted on?) longer sleeve. I also would like to know the words for this!

Black-and-white photo of the same dress showing the sleeve from an angle, shows gathering across the middle of the top part of the sleeve and then it seems to be hemmed with another longer sleeve tucked under. From https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/82123 Color photo of the back of the dress, also from the Met Museum's webpage for it, shows that it might be two sleeves because it seems the top part is hemmed at its bottom. Photo of a similar dress, but made with striped material which reveals the construction a little more. The dress has a short sleeve that is puffed and gathered across the center, and is hemmed at its bottom, then another longer sleeve is sewn on. Brown paper grocery store bag from the 1970s or 1980s. As a public service, during hurricane season they printed a hurricane tracking chart and tips on their bags. This one is from Publix - many of the large chains in the Gulf Coast area did this. Local news stations would tell us the coordinates.

I like her paintings so much, they contain so many possible stories. Here's one of my favorites of hers:

La Llamada [The Call, or The One Who is Called] (1961). A tall, thin woman with large eyes walks towards us, down a hallway with no roof. She wears a long, flowing saffron dress and robe that is encircled with swirls of stardust, and a blaze of red hear twists up in the air until its tip curls around an orb hovering in the sky. On each side of the hallway people are gathered. They are part of the tree bark that makes the walls. One bark-person considers descending the stair.

Especially brutal for Gen X: Small generation sandwiched to take care of larger ones (parents and offspring), already had savings and earning potentials wiped out with multiple recessions, and no time left to save for these Social Security cuts.

In Houston, water has become very expensive because of the way the state is addressing subsidence. My water authority is building a 55-mile, 8-foot-diameter pipeline to move surface water from the city's far-east to far-west side. The fees are astonishing, so water bills are unaffordable to many.

Fort Bend Co. Roads & Bridges/FEMA/Ashbritt only gave info about Hurricane Beryl storm debris pickup via FB and Twitter, and then it was incomplete, incorrect, and usually 24 hours out of date. They are too busy bickering to fix real issues, and don't want to hear from the residents they serve.

The siren system was going to cost $500 million. That's a lot of money! To put it in perspective, Texas taxpayers spent $3 billion to keep us safe with wall segments like this:

A small, lonely stretch of wall quietly rusts in a cleared area somewhat near the banks of the Rio Grande, surrounded by vast lands as far as the eye can see of absolutely nothing but scrub trees and grasses. The Texas Legislature and Governor Abbott built this as a monument to their cult leader, and Biden continued expanding walls like this in Texas, with federal dollars, because he

"Agonized" is just a lazy word politicians use when they make unpopular decisions. REAL agony is, say, when you need healthcare, food, liberty, personal freedoms, and you watch it all stripped away for a massive wealth transfer from regular folks to the ultra-wealthy.

Most people wanted us to gut programs that help regular people or simply didn't care one way or another. They will learn some painful lessons, dragging us along with them, the country may never fully recover, and they better never complain about their suffering.
