Everything You Wanted To Know About Chili But Were Afraid To Ask? All the varieties from Texas Competition (Meat. Spice. Water. All else is forbidden on pain of death) to Cincinnati from Skyline and everything in between? And then you can talk sides.. cornbread, frybread, cinnamon rolls.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
Ah.. what I get for trying to clean my phone without shutting it down. That webcomic was a balm for my soul.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
Oh sweet Cthulhu, yes. 4ezmm
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
The view from the chain bookstore, maybe.. or a section at a big box store. Or the towns that don't have comics or game shops. I'll admit I haven't looked to see if there's a Comixology equivalent for independent titles outside the Big Four (DC, Marvel, Image, Dark Horse?)
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
True.. they're a bit of work. Still, cornbread will work just fine. Doing anything fancy with it, or plain to offset the chili?
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
Cornbread is good. I can't always talk my wife into making frybread and while cinnamon rolls sound interesting I haven't tried it enough times.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
Frybread, cornbread, and cinnamon rolls?
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
Huzzah! I should make coffee.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
The stores fill up with Halloween and 'fall' decor but it's still warm enough to bask outside.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
Monday, September 26th, 1960. The corruption part's been possible since day 1 but I'd argue that television is what made charisma more important than intelligence. Not that JFK was dumb, mind, but he happened to open the door.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
The appeal to an authority that no longer exists? The uselessness achieved through constant repetition? The assumptions it makes about the mindset of the speaker as regards the humanity of the audience? The whole 'you are what you said at age 12 and can never be anything else' aspect?
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
Early on, before Gillian smuggles Valentine Michael Smith out of the hospital. Ben talks her into bugging a hospital room.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
Just World Fallacy in action.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
Darn it, now birria quesadillas sound good. And El Rey de la Birria is open after work. Hmm.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
Awfully tempted to throw that into the idiolect but I keep having the urge to make it Manic Pixie Sex Mommies. Either way, it's the opposite of the God-King-Father/Iron Surgeon element of the frame.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
Darn skippy. 'Course, I haven't done that since 10th grade, but still.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
"What's wrong with a kiss, boy?"
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
Maybe, but I suspect that the desired 'state-funded segregation academy' schools won't have computer labs for the most part. Maybe whatever the next caste up gets.. techbro-optimized private STEM schools?
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
I thought they knew early on that S4 was the end so they went hard on things, thus the multi-parters. Could be wrong.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
Like ENT S4?
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
Sounds like a good afternoon. Love the bread and butters.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
Now that's a fish whose idea of a garbage pizza is pepperoni, sausage, mushroom, and sun-dried tomatoes.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
It became a trophy used as a paperweight, much like culture and history. Seems like the wrong people watched Hudson Hawk and took notes.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
Casablanca with zombies. Kaiju love triangle. Nuclear war musical. Gary Gygax hagiography.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
And now I want to reread Heinlein's 'Double Star'.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
Seem to recall that being an argument in Stranger in a Strange Land.. Gillian fighting the assumption that she'd do the cooking because the remote control was closer to the male character. 'Course, they were fighting over who got to microwave a steak. Unmitigated horror.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
One of my reflexes. If there's a Richard, I look for a Dorothy. If there's a Kimball, I look for a Clarissa. If there's a Talia, I look for a Susan.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
Or a glass of Spotted Cow with a couple shots of espresso mixed in. Goes well with beer cheese soup (got to have the popcorn on top though).
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
Or was all that Signal leakage and buffoonery earlier this year just a ruse to mask ruthlessly effective EMCON?
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
Treachery and Greed on the Planet of the Apes, I suspect.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
That's something Xcrawl never spent much time on, as far as I'm aware. That is a good concept, though. Lots of work for diviners and illusionists.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
Oh.. crud. That would make such a cool Commander deck.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
On the fence of the White House as a warning to the next ten generations that some gifts come at too high a price?
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
That's one memory I would not mind losing. Knowing my luck I'll lose English first.. or GURPS.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
Great for any edition of Paranoia, though. When you're the sole survivor of a mission, nobody can question your statements during a debriefing.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
Now THAT's cardiofidelity! Love it.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
That's what I've been figuring. So much easier and cheaper to convince your enemy to kill themselves off than to, say, properly maintain an aircraft carrier.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
This would just be an avatar, but.. yes, still a bit mild. If nothing else I'd think the move would go up (or each attack includes a dimension door ability). Trying to remember what extras deities get on their home plane.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
No love interest named Susan, correct?
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
Long as nobody burns down Migizi or Uncle Hugo's again.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
As long as it isn't 'numb, exhausted submission'.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
Traffic wasn't all that horrible, luckily. I don't know how commuters do it every day, though.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
I may share a speech community with people but I wouldn't call it a sociolect. Hostilect, sure.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
Tom Clancy's Tales from the Floating Vagabond? Or would Toon be funnier?
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
Volumes I through XII, sure.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
I'd be tempted to argue that the 'society' part of that sentence is no longer true. Similar languages and backgrounds but vastly different conceptual frameworks and OODA loops. 330 million-odd 'rugged individualists' picking over the remnants of what used to be a civilization.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
Ah.. Sailor Steve Costigan. Some really problematic language but rollicking adventure.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
As long as you aren't so paranoid you see every compliment as a threat.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
Does make me wonder what sorts of books they sell at guitar shows.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
It's a facet of the overemphasis on 'rugged individualism'.. like we're supposed to be 330 million-odd subsistence hunter-gatherers ready to kill everyone else at the drop of a hat.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
I think I'd tie it to licenses. So 4 per license.. carry permit, CCW permit, deer license, waterfowl, big game, etc. including 'collector's licenses'. 'Course, that's all pointless without the will to enforce laws in the face of lobbying, corruption, and deadly violence.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
Not bad, but I'd expand 'buy' to include 'make'. Seem to recall a few companies making sure anybody with a 3D printer can put together a Liberator or similar single-shot firearm.. or complete a semi-automatic firearm (was it upper or lower receivers?).
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
Piccadillies are awesome. Probably an attempt to hide how rising prices are going to mess with their offerings. We may see the $10 McDouble yet.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
Take your time, this one looks like 6 hours easy.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
And so many of them are.. wrong.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social)
So instead of going back to bed I make crockpot soup.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
Zombies in the Return of the Living Dead movies and I think the other zombie movies with Russo but not Romero.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
Pro 'the life that actually matters'.. so, the money. Optimally money in the hands of WASPs, but.. money either way.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
Language is like a muscle.. use it or lose it. I suspect that 'vocal conversation' should be on a hierarchy of needs.. pretty near the bottom (survival needs).
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
Sounds silly to some but that's a great example of the sort of data that helps put Presidents in context. Have to admit I'd love to know if any of them watched Babylon 5.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
Got to remind the property of their status, I guess. Wouldn't want them getting ideas above their station.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
Hoses, Pulaskis.. something.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
Parasocial relationships aren't just online.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
That's really unfortunate. I'll admit I don't buy a lot of gifts for my wife but then we share finances, so she buys herself things and I support and celebrate her in other ways. She's also not a fan of flowers so 'I'll drive you to that yarn shop you like' is generally the best thing to do.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
Rush hour traffic all the way to the airport. TSA deciding 'Just kidding!' about tribal IDs working for domestic flights. Surgery next week.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
Live brains. Er. I should go have some coffee and a bite to eat.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
Hmm. Strong religious persuasion? A friend of mine got married a long while back and she wound up in something like that.. not a lot of gift-giving or holidays but her husband was and is supportive and caring.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social)
Alarm goes off at 4. I force myself up and get ready to fight morning rush hour traffic (all those commuters). My wife wanders out and reminds me we don't need to leave the house until 6. Blah.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
TTRPGs. Started as a quarter-life crisis and hasn't really stopped.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
The Ghostbusters 2 treatment?
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
True, it's not a great power source but California's always looking for more water options.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
It's half of the Cracker Barrel/Whole Foods Index, which was used to try to predict voter behavior 30 to 50 years ago in 2008 and 2012. Sorry. Even with certain names muted it seems like every week is a decade.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
Similar. Kraft makes a cheese food product called Cracker Barrel. Both the restaurant and the cheese are trying to evoke an image from an older era of commerce.. same target audience, I suspect.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
Uh-huh. How long before we see dozens of those in the Middle East? Or California?
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
Bingo.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
Do the boring stuff. Yes, it's boring and you have much more interesting things to do. But if you don't, THEY will. Y'know.. THEM. The ones who hear about the future being a boot stamping on a human face now and forever and say "Yes, please, gimme them boots!"
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah. That's what I keep wanting to know, so I can make that my regular order.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
Starting to sound like a Cubano for great justice. Not a bad thing.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
Cognitive Dissonance. One of my favorite concepts, up there with tater tot hotdish.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
Ah, no. Proof that no generation is immune from the phenomenon of 'I like this book so I'll treat it as a lifestyle guide'. My books, for better or worse, are the Lensman series and the Notebooks of Lazarus Long (plus the Art of Worldly Wisdom). Everybody's got something.. book, movie, etc.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
That does sound awfully good. I have to be careful with my vegan options (darn kidneys) but I like the overall idea.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
I want to know so I can order one in solidarity.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
Oncoming deadlines and a Sunday supplement about improving crop yields, maybe? Necessity is the mother of invention, after all.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
Oh, the usual. Not seeing the forest for the trees. Letting our core values be used against us until we dissolve as a nation and as a culture. Wielding America's Razor with a firm hand and no concept of mercy.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
Libertè, Egalitè, Canapè?
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social)
So the food box program my wife and I are taking part it is an effort by OMC, something called 'Equity Eats', and MN Food Rescue. A box of produce and printed recipes/usage suggestions is a lot cheaper than medication and hospital visits. Another candle in the face of oncoming darkness.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
The worst part there would be getting all the non-WASPs out and ceding all that ancestral land.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
Closest I ever got, I think, was (after lending someone my coat) "Wear it if you have nothing else. Please." She.. might have taken me up on that- or worn it with extra perfume on. That scent LINGERED.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
Really sad thing is it's making me dislike Macross Plus (on Hulu) because that's also a love triangle.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
I'll admit I hesitate on Conrad because he reminds me of a protagonist from a Ayn Rand novel. But I'm still holding out hope that one of these episodes includes a working-class revolution and all of them having to flee for their lives on foot. My daughter wants me to watch, too.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
One time, one or more targets, framed differently.. it maintains a level of deniability. Either approach kills the target but one way makes the killing official state policy.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
The 'DOJ/FBI agents attempted to interview the suspect, who leapt out a window onto some bullets' approach seems different to me. Probably because the agents involved can, and will, do so again, and for every one we know about there are many that don't make the news. 'Lone wolf shooter' is, well..
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
I still see his candy bars here and there, but that's as close as I get to his content.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
5) Wolverine (too popular) 4) Rogue (too much airtime) 3) Gambit (only #3 because of the drama with Rogue) 2) Jubilee (Nothing strong against but House of M made her more interesting, from what I hear) 1) Nightcrawler (Has a lot of melodrama potential, doesn't wallow in it)
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
All 77 million or so. 'Course, we can't give them all an acre of land. But I could see walling off Utah as Coventry for them.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
I need to finish reading that. Looks cool with a group that wants to collaborate on building a setting. I've also heard good things about Index Card RPG but don't own it.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
I'd go with something like GURPS Lite. 'Mechanic', not umpteen billion specializations. No No-Landing-Extraction skill. Melee Weapon (Easy, Average, Hard). Hand-To-Hand (Easy, Average, Hard). No familiarity penalties. Cut down on choice paralysis.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm not opposed to the idea, though I may not by those. The hoodie made to look like the 6th or 7th Doctor's coat, or the NX-01 coverall in my size, sure. And at one point I had Spider-Man pajamas, but who didn't? Not sure what fandom I'd want as underwear.
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
Pigeonholing?
Ray Aune (@kerthulhu75.bsky.social) reply parent
I'll admit I say 'Roll DX and tell me how much you succeeded or failed' (as opposed to 'Roll DX-6' or stating the default out loud) to make things sound less daunting.
