The RW obsession with the term “elites” in place of more concrete labels kind of says it all imo. They take for granted the idea that there’s a group of special, better people out there, but the world has granted that status to the wrong people.

I think both are true. Most people hold a contradictory mix of compassion and vindictiveness toward prisoners and haven’t thought enough about it to work out the cognitive dissonance so you can get them to go either way depending on context and priming

It’s the Democratic Peace Theory flipped on its head. If liberal democracies are less likely to go to war with each other, that must also be true of dictatorships (it is not), so the best way to avoid war with dictators is to behave like one (it is not)

With a game remake they could lean into different genres with the route splits to reflect the different POV characters. Locke’s path becomes a stealth action game like MGS, Sabin’s path becomes a beat ‘em up, Terra’s is more classic RPG. Bonus: Moogle Tower Defense!

That’s what I had learned too. Goodwin takes it further and (without directly saying so) makes the case that McClellan was actually quite canny and his “cowardice” was deliberately calculated to damage his rivals and elevate his public reputation, with thousands of American lives as collateral

A $10 increase seems like a pittance compared to the order of magnitude more breadth and depth games can offer compared to 20-30 years ago. But do you have the time to dive in and fully experience it in long, uninterrupted sessions the way you did when you were 12?

Indoor social spaces being even more critically important as climate change expands the regions of the country that are intolerably or even lethally hot or cold for half the year

The movie with the current best shot at breaking the Crowe curse? You guessed it: The Pope’s Exorcist II

The only way to get a sequel to a Russell Crowe movie is to kill off his character in the first movie (Gladiator II, Snyder Cut). If you even hint that he might return, your franchise is doomed (The Mummy, Thor: Blood and Thunder, Kraven).

What if there was a secret third way a person could spend their time?

Weirdly getting a kind of hopeful bounce from this. We’re a nation of conspiracy theorists who prefer the truth to feel rebellious. Media institutions trying to participate in the resistance was counterproductive. These shifts might get us back closer to 2005

Anyway, I was in your shoes earlier in my career and learned over time that the teaching is pointless. They’re testing waters to see who they can offload work to so if it’s in your job description just send them the pdf and if it’s not then just refuse.

I mean that just further demonstrates that it’s not an age thing. I guess I could’ve said “shitty institutions that encourage people at the top to remain ignorant because their underlings will be forced to pick up the slack” since that’s not unique to politics.

I don’t think age is really that much of a factor. A 75 year old today who worked a regular white collar job would have had a good 15 years with email in their workplace before they retired. Its a politics problem

“Just keep trying buddy you’ll figure it out” is not really a productive response to accessibility concerns
