If I had a nickel for every time I accidentally told people I wanted to involuntarily kill homeless people on live TV... Well I'd have zero nickels, because I'm not a shitty person.

We don't need to debate whether racism is bad. We don't need to argue whether undocumented immigrants should be treated humanely. We do not need to respond to policy ideas that are morally and ethically bankrupt. Literally nobody supports this except racists. And racists are bad.
Logan (@logank.bsky.social) reply parent
Like, I'm firmly elder millennial and I know *of* Charlie Kirk and his shitty rhetoric but other than a couple of "Charlie Kirk gets owned in debate" shorts that I'm fed every once in a while he occupies approximately zero percent of my brain. Gen Xers probably never heard of him until yesterday.
Logan (@logank.bsky.social) reply parent
My dumb take is that most of the people in charge of the legacy media are *still* incredibly oblivious about what's happening on social media and are just parroting whatever hot takes they're hearing without so much as an ounce of research about their reporting because it gets them eyes-on-ads.

"I'm going back to Twitter, where the right-wing racists (and the people who don't mind sharing space with them) don't attack my ideas with dogpiling" just screams self-awareness, right?

Caring about children would mean funding public schools and competing for the best educators, universal Pre-K childcare, eliminating child hunger, ensuring science-based health care, and it goes without saying, finding, arresting, and prosecuting child molesters fiercely and with reckless abandon.

4. Fwiw, the idea that health care is fundamentally compatible with private markets with no safety net is in dispute. Yes, it's incredibly complicated, and yes, he has done some good in this area with Cost Plus, but it's a band-aid and he knows it. Why not *start there* instead of doing this?
Logan (@logank.bsky.social) reply parent
3. He's like the 2nd or 3rd most followed account on bsky. It is statistically inevitable that he's going to get shitty people in his comments. It is *on him* to navigate that; he *largely benefits* from his reach on this platform (example: the COO of the platform is responding to him personally).
Logan (@logank.bsky.social) reply parent
2. Having a billion dollars is distinct from being a billionaire. Individual versus class. He is smart enough to know the difference and to understand that by and large, people believe that billionaires are a symptom of a larger problem (www.federalreserve.gov/releases/z1/...), not him personally.
Logan (@logank.bsky.social) reply parent
I really dislike this take, but okay, I'll bite. 1. @mcuban.bsky.social failed to engage the original response to his post, instead focusing on the dogpiling (which was *very* tame but okay, sure, we should do less of it, even to billionaires).

It's not unspoken at all. The Dems have literally run on the platform of, "If not us, then who? *Them?!*" for most of my adult life. And you know what? A lot of us have internalized it, made it part of our identity. Sacrifice for our country. Vote for the guy that is less worse. I'm so tired of it.
Logan (@logank.bsky.social) reply parent
It is shocking how completely reliant they have become on polling and groupthink. I couldn't name ten Dems off the top of my head that have shown even a hint of authenticity about any of this. It all seems so...performative.

It's like bipartisanship except for stupid right-wing nonsense! God I am so tired of making space for shitty takes because it's the best idea Dems have to "reach out" to the right. Maybe just have a fucking platform based on things like human rights and labor and uhh democracy and ignore the rest?
Logan (@logank.bsky.social) reply parent

Yep! Popularity used to have a natural friction due to communication platforms. People had to talk about it in person, share things in letters, or even text messages. Now something can become a global phenomenon literally overnight for no reason at all.
Logan (@logank.bsky.social) reply parent
I would also point out that if population decline is "such a huge issue" for Republicans, it makes a hell of a lot more sense to let a handful of billionaires leave the city/state/country and try to keep the tens of thousands of working-class residents here instead.
Logan (@logank.bsky.social) reply parent
"Defensiveness before compassion: when people struggle with a perceived loss of power and control because affirming the problem means highlighting their own privilege, having never experienced a similar obstacle or oppression themselves" is the awful title of an imaginary book I dwell on a lot now
Logan (@logank.bsky.social) reply parent
In other words, it is the freedom *to choose what you ought to do*, not *what you want to do*. If your choices amount to a rejection of human rights or the rule of law, or you seek to undermine progress to ensure equality and free and fair elections, you are not practicing democratic freedom.
Logan (@logank.bsky.social)
The underpinnings of *real* freedom are not based on unlimited and/or excessive choice. Strengthening social cohesion requires a consideration of how your actions impact those around you *at a minimum*. Democracy is fundamentally incompatible with selfishness.

We're all in different stages of grief over the death of what our country once was. Weirdly, that might be the only thing that unites us in the near-term, because the way forward looks wildly different depending on the political, social, and even familial context.
Logan (@logank.bsky.social) reply parent
Progressives—real progressives—understand this and want to create something new, something better. It doesn't mean we didn't have good ideas before that we can't use again, but the end result was what you see today. It is time to look for something new, and we need a political party to champion it.
Logan (@logank.bsky.social)
The reason all politicians don't want Dems to accept reality is that once you get there, you are more clear-headed; you can see that the thing you were holding onto is dead and gone. Keep us in denial, or keep us angry, or entice us with some false dream of compromise so we keep them in power.
