Right now in Michigan, we’re in the middle of a budget showdown. The Republican Speaker of the House slipped a provision into the budget that would kneecap our Attorney General – and make it near-impossible for us to take the Trump Administration to court.
We need to flip the tables on a system where Americans are discriminated against, kicked off of their healthcare, and where some look out for themselves instead of others.
This morning, I attended service at the Historic Little Rock Baptist Church in Detroit. I left inspired by Rev. Antoine T. Colvin's passion and message - we cannot be passive in the face of injustice - we may need to flip over some tables.
Every day, in hospitals and doctor’s offices and clinics and in homes, nurses are there for us. That’s why I’m so grateful for the endorsement of Nurses for America – and so determined to stand with them against attacks on our healthcare system, and to build one worthy of their strength and care.
Ya know what? They’re right. And frankly I’m sick of it too. I appreciate the time and the candor. I love when people don’t hold back. And I’m thankful that a good number hung back to sign my petitions to help get me on the ballot. We’ve got a chance to do things differently. We’ve got to.
These apprentices care about their union and their paychecks and their jobs, and they also care about the country. They watch people get into office and get rich. So much of politics reeks. And so much of it feels broken.
What I heard? They’re pissed off. They think politicians are corrupt, the system is broken, and no one in it actually cares about them or their lives.
This week, I met with apprentices at UA Local 174 Plumbers & Pipefitters in Coopersville. I wanted to hear from them - what they think about our politics, about government, about the state of our country.
In Michigan, we passed a red flag law, safe storage, universal background checks, and closed the domestic violence loophole. We CAN make change. But we won’t stop this epidemic of gun violence until we elect people at every level who view our kids and communities' safety as a priority.
It isn't enough to just say that the Big Ugly Bill kills good union jobs and raises prices for all of us. It's on us to share how we can – and will – build something better. A New American Dream – with a strong labor movement at the core.
and how Winnie Brinks used her remarks to call out - years after Governor Snyder kept union members out, we invited them in. We righted a wrong. And we strengthened labor. Together. They also reminded me is that, in this moment, Democrats need to "complete the sentence."

We know the way forward because we wrote the way forward here in Michigan. We refused to accept that we were powerless, and flipped control of the State Senate for the first time in 40 years. But what good is having power if you don't use it?

Nobody aspires to just get by. That’s survival, not success. People want something to believe in. They want to win. To thrive.
They want to build something. They want to be successful. They want to do it themselves. And too often, Democratic messaging sounds like, “Democrats are helping you put food on the table.”
That’s why one of the pillars of this campaign is about reclaiming and offering the idea of success - the true American Dream. We have to acknowledge that most people don’t want a hand out.
We need to speak to those voters—not by mimicking Trump’s style of cruelty, but by offering something better.
On Election Day 2024, volunteers working the polls on college campuses in Michigan reported young men show up in MAGA hats, clearly there to vote for Trump and no one else. That tells us something.
But at the same time, American culture has created a vacuum for young men. And into that vacuum, people like Trump have stepped in—with toxic masculinity dressed up as power - the idea that others’ progress has come at the expense of your success, particularly if you’re a young man.
The princess movies my four-year-old daughter watches now aren’t about damsels in distress; they’re about heroines who save themselves. That’s real progress.
I’ve been thinking a lot about how much has changed over my lifetime—how Barbie went from an impossible beauty standard and an object to a symbol of aspiration - the next president or an astronaut and a judge.
Caring for other people isn’t a weakness. It’s a strength. And we need to model that strength—not with bravado or cruelty, but by showing up with purpose and humanity. 🧵
