I hated the original Plinkett stuff, I like RLM, this video was really just Mike saying stuff he's said in other Star Wars videos (especially The Acolyte review) in the Plinkett voice. It felt a little unnecessary. They do go after the right-wing screamers a lot, too
the autumn and the scarletđ (@beneprism.rip) reposted reply parent
I have. It's mostly fine. I didn't really agree with the specific part being referred to here, but I saw it as an overbroad application of a valid critique* in other contexts rather than motivated by racial animus *"Media works are increasingly shaped by targeted marketing requirements" basically

Star Wars went from being the product of one maniac to a corporate-managed catch-all brand literally overnight, while Star Trek had a weird 20-year transitional period between the death of Roddenberry and Abramsâ reboot where Paramount was at least trying to ape what Roddenberry did.

Secret History of Star Wars book is so damn fascinating, the common narrative of how Star Wars was thought up/created is almost entirely wrong/edited by Lucas after the fact to make it seem like he the broad strokes of the movie franchise planned out from the beginning (he didnât!!!)
Ceiling Cat (@ceilingcat.bsky.social) reposted reply parent
The Secret History of Star Wars by Michael Kaminski illustrates this little open secret. It meticulously documents the history of drafts George Lucas struggled to write. Even then, the final edit can be considered a final draft.

I hate that they made a whole movie portraying MacArthur's exoneration of Hirohito as some just and noble endeavor. He should have hanged.
Andy Craig (@andycraig.bsky.social) reposted reply parent
In a way, it's even worse he went on to become an icon of democratization and reconciliation. Even though he was probably more or less sincere about that. And it's true he was, certainly not innocent, but not the driving force. Nevertheless, he should have been tried. Or at the very least abdicated.
Andy Craig (@andycraig.bsky.social) reposted reply parent
No, that is not true. There was no such agreement and it wasn't in the surrender, which was unconditional. It was a decision MacArthur made postwar even though Truman didn't like it (though he also didn't override it) and it was very unpopular in the US at the time.
Andy Craig (@andycraig.bsky.social) reposted reply parent
They also engaged in lots of flagrantly improper misconduct, in effect a conspiracy the prosecutors and defendants were both in on, to coordinate testimony at the tribunal so as to make sure nobody said anything implicating Hirohito.
Andy Craig (@andycraig.bsky.social) reposted reply parent
His very presence for decades afterward left room for a mainstream narrative about how it was all just a big misunderstanding, or an honorable defeat, or they'd been tricked into it by just a few bad guys, etc. Imagine if Rudolf Hess or Karl Donitz had a white tie dinner at the White House in 1975.
