The abandoned Dunes Motel on Route 66, just outside of Barstow, California. Once a stopping point for travelers along the "Mother Road," this small motel now sits vacant under the intense desert sun, waiting for occupants that will never come. #abandoned #urbex #EastCoastKin #photography #Route66

Baker is oddly full of sound. Lots of people get off there to get gas and food and stop at the Alien Beef Jerky place. I-10 roars right past it. But you're not wrong. Elsewhere out there, its quiet as all get out.

Studies of an abandoned service garage and gas station on the outskirts of Baker, California. Once a place where one would fuel up before continuing on to Las Vegas or Barstow, it now sits like a lonesome sentinel, watching the world go by. #abandoned #urbex #EastCoastKin #photography #California

An abandoned cafe in the near-abandoned town of Desert Center, California. Once a thriving and bustling eatery where truck drivers and weary vacationers could stop for meatloaf and apple pie, it now stands open and slowly decaying in the desert heat. #abandoned #urbex #EastCoastKin #photography

An abandoned warehouse, possible machine shop in a dead town somewhere in the Mojave Desert. No idea what this place might have been used for, but it seems they were working on the shells of old decommissioned diesel train engines? Your guess is as good as mine! #abandoned #urbex #photography

And just like that, over three and half hours in a mindblowing distance up in the sky, I went from mountains, sage, and 117-degree weather of southwest desert, back to the damp, wet and humid green of Northeast Ohio. An amazing trip with SO many photographic opportunities; can't wait to share!

The grimy and silent remains of an abandoned power plant in the Rust Belt. Once fueling the productivity of an entire city's worth of industrial endeavors, this plant is now still, silent and drowsing in the echoes of what once was. #abandoned #urbex #EastCoastKin #photography #industrial #factory

Because our culture is based on throw-away. We always clamor for the new, but never cherish or take care of the old. We seemingly hate our history, in exchange for the latest glossy and shiny fad.

Shifts in economy, shifts in what families wanted to do. Instead of going local, they all wanted to fly and go abroad. Sad, but I suppose it happens.

The "Borscht Belt" fell apart in the 2000's. It became cheaper to go abroad and the resorts became less popular. They all began to fall apart without the old numbers of people that used to visit.
