You and I are not talking about the same people. Yes, journalism can be a rich kid's sport for sure; that's very true. However, there are more (or at least in the timeframe I'm referring to, *were*) of journos who *only* knew newsroom culture and nothing else.
You're underestimating the impact of actual incompetence and generational laziness. I've known many people who worked in a lot of newsrooms and to say that I wasn't blown away by the talent those rooms included is a vast understatement.
Steve Bannon literally used Gamergate as his model for the Trump takeover of the GOP and everything. I have no idea why so many people and institutions are so committed to not seeing the straight, short line from deeply online young men being radicalized to real world consequences.
Those domain experts might mean the finally mastering the discussion as a country re: online spaces, "too online" men, and avoiding the morale panics that invariably show up. I did warn you this was cold comfort.
You're 1M% correct about this, of course. Cold comfort warning: At least since then, technology journalism has evolved quite a bit as a space. There are very, very successful journalists and institutions (Wired, Platformer, etc.) that cover the link between tech, free speech, and democracy today.
