Lucas was also willing, even eager, to alienate his audience and push his story into places that pissed off fans. Even before he got notorious for it with the Prequels, ESB pissed off a lot of fans whose reaction in the zines was more negative than people remember (they were Luke/Leia shippers).
Bob Clark (@neowestchester.bsky.social) reply parent
Here's the other thing-- I like how BvS reframes the battle through Wayne's POV, making him a vessel for fan criticism as a fuel for his vengeance! That's interesting! I don't know if it's actually GOOD, but frankly it's as good an excuse to get them fight as anything!
Bob Clark (@neowestchester.bsky.social) reply parent
I remember a little how weirded out I was when TLJ showed Rey enthusiastically shouting when straight up killing the Red Guards. The Prequels got around this with druids, mostly, and the OT only had heroes kill Stormtroopers with guns. Small differences, but they can take you out of it.
Bob Clark (@neowestchester.bsky.social) reply parent
You can also argue that at that stage in the movie, all of Metropolis/The World is at risk from Lex's black hole. But probably it all comes down to the neck snap. Like, if Snyder had him just PUNCH Zod, people might have excused it.
Bob Clark (@neowestchester.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah. Like if MoS had ended with a LexCorp guy taking Zod's body, that would have distracted people away from this.
Bob Clark (@neowestchester.bsky.social) reply parent
That threw me too. I would imagine most of the fans who would get mad about that were probably too busy speculating if he was gonna turn into Bizarro or something.
Bob Clark (@neowestchester.bsky.social)
Now now. That's on Hawkgirl, not him. Unless you mean the clone, and I dunno. Maybe he's dead, or not. Who knows.
Bob Clark (@neowestchester.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm in that weird spot where I was never into Goonies as a kid. Even with Short Round being in it! Something about the combination of old fart gangsters and pirate treasure thing. I never liked pirates as a kid. Never. My little sister LOVES it though. So generationally it's got a shotgun spread.
Bob Clark (@neowestchester.bsky.social) reply parent
Happy Days at least had an alien in it.
Bob Clark (@neowestchester.bsky.social) reply parent
So, "Andor" fans. *Red dot appears on forehead*

Saying something isn't genocide is probably one of the defining characteristics of genocide.
Bob Clark (@neowestchester.bsky.social) reply parent
The Bond series are a good metric test of this. I grew up loving both the Connery and Brosnan eras. My dad always talked about how he liked the Moore era, but it always seemed pretty silly and ridiculous to me. Craig, finally, was a Bond we could both agree on 100%.
Bob Clark (@neowestchester.bsky.social)
Watched Toby Dammit last night in light of Terrence Stamp's passing. There's a wonderful moment where one of the interviewers asks him if he believes in God, and after a great deal of very cheeky answers, he simply whispers "No", in such a way that it feels like he genuinely wishes he could.
Bob Clark (@neowestchester.bsky.social) reply parent
The thing that's odd is when one generation's nostalgia takes root and is handed down to the next, and the next, as some kind of cultural conditioning.
Bob Clark (@neowestchester.bsky.social) reply parent
Much more radical and antiestablishment than you think at first glance when you realize where and when they came from, too.
Bob Clark (@neowestchester.bsky.social) reply parent
I love a lot of his movies-- most of them if I'm honest-- but I'm pissed at two things primarily. One, that he still won't release Kafka in any form. And two-- that, if rumors are true, he's the reason Criterion wasn't able to do a Spalding Gray box set (he wants his movies saved for a Soderbox).
Bob Clark (@neowestchester.bsky.social) reply parent
I've seen the first episode btw and my main takeaway on its own quality is it's at its best when it's not trying to recreate Ridley's first movie. The Wendy stuff is pure Hawley and it's all pretty cool. We'll see how this goes, Alien is a franchise that thrives with new blood.
Bob Clark (@neowestchester.bsky.social) reply parent
This is similar to my befuddlement at the critical reception for Andor. More to the point-- I love Alien 3, and dig Prometheus & Covenant, to lesser degrees mostly owing to Ridley not getting to go hog wild on his weird ideas. I'm mostly worried AE is recounting them out of the narrative.

Paging Dr. Revok.
Bob Clark (@neowestchester.bsky.social) reply parent
Kyle as a nostalgic sad boy who reveres the past has a ring of truth to it. I wonder if in Lucas' draft that idea woukd have more weight if he was like that as an Alliance hero who hides his Imperial kink, less outward and more crypto fascist. Or maybe he'd just want to fuck the hot Sith Twilek.
Bob Clark (@neowestchester.bsky.social) reply parent
I feel like there were two thematic options here-- there was Lucas' weird idea having Maul become a crime lord recruiting former Imperials and disaffected soldiers, or do the anime thing and have the new evil be within the Alliance itself. But neither of those are commercial enough for Disney.
Bob Clark (@neowestchester.bsky.social) reply parent
I wonder if George Lucas is visible in this as a cameraman.
Bob Clark (@neowestchester.bsky.social) reply parent
C'mon don't you want to see Gollum defect to the West and match wits with both the Americans and the Soviets?
Bob Clark (@neowestchester.bsky.social) reply parent
I honestly love the story about how for Blade Runner they came up with "I want more life... FATHER" to replace the curse version for TV edits, but then Ridley realized that version was much better.

Bob Clark (@neowestchester.bsky.social) reply parent
I honestly think a major part of it that we just don't have an adequate way around probably is social media has effectively made the popularity mentality of high school more or less permanent. It's a self reinforcing loop.
Bob Clark (@neowestchester.bsky.social) reply parent
Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, knows it was put under the knife by Harvey Weinstein. There's easily another hour in there that could rescue what's already a very good movie and restore it to, very likely, his greatest movie ever.
Bob Clark (@neowestchester.bsky.social) reply parent
It feels like hustle culture, gig economy libertarianism, has poisoned everything at this point, and people are just too castled up in whatever success they have to see psst themselves to the suffering of others. I feel like I'm Iceman Cometh-ing most of the time. We're ghost racing ourselves.
Bob Clark (@neowestchester.bsky.social) reply parent
There's a Goldilocks zone to the ideal amount of Kirby. Go just far enough, you have Galactus and the Silver Surfer. Go too far, and you get Inhumans and Eternals. Even if it's not actually them.

This is literally a plot point in Roujin Z, a great forgotten anime by Katsuhiro Otomo.

I think his lawyer is saying he hasn't had access to his client. Sounds like only one family member has been able to contact him. ICE is keeping him away from everyone, a serious constitutional issue.

History would probably be a lot kinder to Stan Lee if he only credited himself as Editor on most of the Marvel books he was involved with. Hell, people might argue he deserved more. But because he and the Marvel Method were tools to squeeze and undercut artists, his reputation is muddy, at best.

I consider it a deep personal, and hell I'll say it, a moral failing that I understand this concept personally, sight unseen, as a lifelong Star Wars fan.
Bob Clark (@neowestchester.bsky.social) reply parent
I suspect this is because they're building Top Gun around the aerial footage, whereas Maverick, for all its purported "we did it for real", actually uses extensive special effects and therefore actually can build a genuine narrative on the mission basics.
Bob Clark (@neowestchester.bsky.social) reply parent
One thing Maverick does really well to improve the original is provide a rock solid mission structure. Here's the thing we gotta blow up, here's how we're gonna do it, etc. Top Gun oddly is pretty sloppy on the actual mechanics of what they're doing.
Bob Clark (@neowestchester.bsky.social) reply parent
It's when you start feeling that way about disposable genre imitation crap from the 90s that way because you can see a modicum of craft and thought that's absent now, that's when the decline is visible. Not in the Speilbergs, but the Copycats.
Bob Clark (@neowestchester.bsky.social) reply parent
Even if it's just guilt by association. They should understand. It's the economy, stupid.
Bob Clark (@neowestchester.bsky.social) reply parent
Well, the DNC leadership might disagree...
Bob Clark (@neowestchester.bsky.social) reply parent
I should've also said-- I've only watched Forever once because my emotional reaction to it was so strong and frankly I don't think I'd want to relive it. Granted, it's as close as you can possibly get to a happy ending in a deliberately open ended work like that, but I hate that it has an ending.
Bob Clark (@neowestchester.bsky.social) reply parent
"Don't be stupid, be a smarty! Come and join the Botsi party!"

Someone's gotta make something out of this. Can't you just see this being made by kids or something?
Bob Clark (@neowestchester.bsky.social) reply parent
Time Masters is going to come out from Criterion at some point. I really hope Gandahar gets rescued in full. There's gotta be a wider audience for a pulpy sci fi movie that has time travel, robots and tons of naked blue chicks.
Bob Clark (@neowestchester.bsky.social) reply parent
In truth there's a lot of international animation that doesn't really get much play here because there sadly hasn't been much of a market for it outside of anime and a newly growing arthouse scene. Even then, there's lots of stuff like Gandahar that only got released in a butchered form.
Bob Clark (@neowestchester.bsky.social) reply parent
That picture is depressingly manipulative too, because it implies some sort of disability issue at work that's nowhere in the article itself.

Okay I don't have a dog in this fight, but I've done the math on this and this joke could go further in dangerous ways.
Bob Clark (@neowestchester.bsky.social) reply parent
It doesn't help that we spent the past few decades mocking one of the few guys who actually knew and respected that pipeline in favor of people who broke it completely because they didn't respect the craft.
Bob Clark (@neowestchester.bsky.social) reply parent
The real issue is in producers wanting to be able to "fix things in post", ie micromanaging things past the point when you can actually shoot, or previs anything. CGI is being used in a backwards way to how it works best in the pipeline, as a spell check instead of a word processor.

I wouldn't watch the sequel OVA from something like 20 year ago now because the English dub wouldn't pay Petrea Burchard enough to come back as Ryoko. Who the hell do you think I'm shipping?
Bob Clark (@neowestchester.bsky.social) reply parent
This is also why I get weirded out by the people who use the guillotine as a political symbol of resistance. Like... you do know what happened when those guys took power, right? To everyone, including themselves?
Bob Clark (@neowestchester.bsky.social) reply parent
My dad used to work at CBS in broadcast distribution. This is all very disappointing to us, knowing the legacy of the network as a standard bearer for honesty in journalism.

Jujutsu Kaisen Hidden Inventory/Premature Death screening. Surprisingly big crowd, enough to overlook how they all did that anime fangirl laughing at the sudden gore thing at a twisty death. But mostly the ending montage of the young Geto and Gojo goofing off as dumb kids really threw me.
Bob Clark (@neowestchester.bsky.social) reply parent
Understandable. The didcourse on the Zoraya case has been through the Autistic community, so I'm naturally curious about that. But a lot of these things sort of demand their own conversation.

Does the doc touch on any of the Netherlands cases like Zoraya ter Beek?
Bob Clark (@neowestchester.bsky.social)
It can take you years to find yourself after spending so long trying to force yourself into the shape of something else, and you claw at that you, the real you, and make an enemy of anyone who tries to coax you back into the straitjacket. This is about anime and video games, oddly enough.
Bob Clark (@neowestchester.bsky.social)
I know I'm like 5 or 6 years behind everyone now, but it's nice getting back into games with Death Stranding, even if I get the feeling that most of the missions I'm doing so far are very well sci-fi narrativizations to hide the fact that they're essentially tutorial missions.
Bob Clark (@neowestchester.bsky.social) reply parent
Timed perfectly to fit before the eyecatch of an anime.
Bob Clark (@neowestchester.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah, I'd be happy if you showed the Imax aspect ratio in a normal theater in a lot of cases. The price is a factor, and availability. My hometown used to have a bona-fide Imax, but got rid of the projector.
Bob Clark (@neowestchester.bsky.social) reply parent
Honestly I'm not even sure the parts about her date there are entirely legitimate. It feels like she got an assignment to write about AI and this was how it got spun out or something.
Bob Clark (@neowestchester.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm generally there for seeing the movies in their full aspect ratio and find Nolan at least works better that way. But at the same time, it just makes me wish he'd just shoot in 1.33 on full frame academy and call it a day.
Bob Clark (@neowestchester.bsky.social) reply parent
It takes months to book IMAX 70mm seats when the movie is out. I got to see Oppenheimer and Sinners at my only IMAX capable theater on their last days, respectively. If any theaters really are selling this far in advance, it's extreme, but maybe not a bad idea.
Bob Clark (@neowestchester.bsky.social) reply parent
I think that's the point of the article. About half of it is psychologists being interviewed about how hollow and superficial these regurgitation machines are.

Bob Clark (@neowestchester.bsky.social) reply parent
Okay having read the article, it barely mentions the assault and makes it all sound like she attacked a 60 year old woman just so she could generate a promotional article on a sketchy tabloid website.
Bob Clark (@neowestchester.bsky.social) reply parent
That's sort of my point. After he bests the Titans, you have to deal with him wanting to do another* colony drop, only this time it's on a global scale. *Whether or not you include The Origin in this and his role in Operation Britain is maybe a determining factor.
