I asked a few doctors about that when our kids were on the way. Apparently enough of us had read/heard of it that they were each prepared for the question and told me that it was, indeed, a single study that no one had yet replicated.

I'm not sure if it was a saying earlier, but that's the title of a book Jim Hightower published in 1998.

His premise is that the GOP increasingly relies on low-propensity voters-- who'll be more dissuaded by hurdles to voting-- so . . . fair enough. But you KNOW hurdles'll be selectively applied like when OH allowed early voting for mil and senior citizens or TX allowed CCW as ID but not college IDs.

Annualized inflation during the same period was 3.9%. Seems obvious housing costs can't outstrip inflation by that much for that long (assuming her neighborhood is representative) w/o causing problems-- cost of housing will take up a larger and larger portion of income. Plus, she got to live there.

I think you might be thinking of the Danish king suggesting that all Danes should wear it if Jewish Danes were forced to rather than the Dutch.
Patrick Brettell (@patrickbrettell.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah, it was short hand similar to the way we describe, for example, someone from Wyoming having so many more senators than someone from California.

Patrick Brettell (@patrickbrettell.bsky.social) reply parent
C'mon, Greg. Don't you know you should commission a wholly new piece of work as your jokey introduction to a thread in which you offer up free expertise and/or jokes in a free forum. Should be budgeting at least $150 or so.

Is that true universally or only among wealthier countries? I know, for example, that it's significantly easier for me to visit Ethiopia than for my brother-in-law to visit here (and he has a clean record and significant relationships to ensure his return-- things nobody asked me about for my visa).

A possibly controversial take: I hope Batman isn't a major part of the universe. He's been done enough, he's best in gritty realism which the rest of DC isn't, and Mr Terrific can provide much of what he usually brings to the team efforts.

Patrick Brettell (@patrickbrettell.bsky.social) reply parent
I think your stats suggest that a sitting vice president is still far likelier than a sitting senator, congressman, or governor. Setting aside those veeps who succeeded because the president died or left office, you're at about 4% of veeps-- far higher than any of those other categories.
Patrick Brettell (@patrickbrettell.bsky.social) reply parent
Thing is, that's still a pretty small dataset and there's a good handful in there who didn't have the opportunity to be elected while sitting as vice president because they'd already become president upon the untimely demise of their predecessor.
