Pete Rose died on September 30, 2024. Biden was still president.

Using this ruleset, I read a sentence that begins: "Reuters reports that Bill Maher"; the first rule condition is met, so I stop reading. I can test for the second rule condition only by continuing to read the sentence that the first rule has stopped me from reading. So the ruleset is invalid.

If the Fed were truly "independent," wouldn't it have representation from workers, small business... y'know non-corporate bankers?

Don't worry, there will be another cutesy meme soon so it'll all work out.

Or longer. Bermudas, maybe.
PD (@patrickdavitt.bsky.social) reply parent
But if you stop reading the sentence after "Bill Maher," how can you know how the sentence ends?
PD (@patrickdavitt.bsky.social) reply parent
Or reproduction.

Excellent analysis, and well argued. The nut graf, paraphrased for length, is that government regulation of capitalism proves that "free enterprise" is a built system, "a political project." Thus belying the preferred neoliberal view of capitalism as an unalterable state of nature.
PD (@patrickdavitt.bsky.social) reply parent
Thanks for the update!

Yes, definitely. A fairly robust Communist presence, some anarchists, trade unions, Basque separatists.

Hmmm... Is the actual MAGA hardcore base 40%? Or does that 40% take in 10% or so leaning that way in a two-party race but who might vote for an actual Republican in a multiparty race?
PD (@patrickdavitt.bsky.social) reply parent
I dunno. I served, and when I saw the soldiers in Trump's self-extolling military parade ambling along like a group of guys headed to the pub, I thought, "This is not how dedicated troops march in a ceremonial parade." Which in turn climbs the ladder to the non-coms, officers and generals.

It's the latest version of, "We can win on our positions by changing them to their positions."

I just visited your site and admire its spirit and focus. I don't see any names of the "new young leaders" who have been cultivated. Maybe they should go beyond the ideals and identifying and promoting some promising future candidates.

I'd watch it! But I bet the "asshole lab partner" is pretty much the same as the "asshole deskmate," the "asshole warehouse colleague," the "asshole fry cook..." etc.

Forgot lawyering: the lawyers liked Rumpole of the Bailey. Keep in mind this was all taking place in Canada so the lawyering activities and processes were very much like those in the UK.

When I was a newspaperman, I did a series asking people in various professions which TV shows were most accurate in depicting the actual work and people-types. As I recall the winners: Cops: Barney Miller Medical: M*A*S*H* Teaching/school: Degrassi Junior High/Degrassi High

The unfortunate aspect of this is that we seems to be just taking the companies' word for it that they are only "passing on" the cost of increased tariffs. It's a golden opportunity for them to just bump prices to increase profit, and blame the tariffs for the entire price increase.

Yup. My buddy and I went Opening Night at the Stanley Theatre in Vancouver. City's first 70mm/Dolby. They handed out playbills like at a play, no opening credits--the film just started with SFX of a chopper flying from front left to rear right, with Doppler. Blew my mind, then and ever since.

The Yankees will soon need approval of broadcast deals. Can't start too early kissing regulatory ass. FCC Chair Brendan Carr wrote in Project 2025 that the FCC should promote satellite Internet, specifically Elon Musk's Starlink, and that the agency overregulates the communications industry.

Means "air fleet." But re the other inference... In the legislature where I lived, one daily order of business was members welcoming visitors to the public gallery. The opposition party faked a visitor slip for a government member, who rose and happily welcomed constituent "Ms. Connie Lingus."
