I’m a Marylander so I don’t know Newsom’s history as well as others do. That’s why I asked. Is there a reliable source for these past actions? Where people were kicked out of encampments with no alternative or resources offered? Would definitely want to know about that if he runs for POTUS.

I think it’s a bit more complicated than that. I think they build community in the encampments and others have said on this thread that they aren’t able to take all of their belongings with them as well. There is no quick fix because we as a country don’t put enough resources into it.

providing housing and free medical services and job training without destroying their belongings and shelter. most of these people won't magically be dropped into a shelter, and if they are, some of those shelters are worse than being on the street. they'll just have to go to a different street.
But, then that is a requirement of transferring people, not being outright against the concept. I feel people think there is no solution, and hence are fighting doing something.

I’m going to stick my neck out here: the camps do real economic harm to nearby businesses. The reality is people don’t want to walk past camps to shop or rent an apartment. If you want to, invite some unhoused to camp at your place. But it needs to be banned and enforced anywhere near businesses.

Most shelters do not provide security for one's belongings, do not allow pets, separate families, have weird work requirements, do not let you just stay there during the day, offer no or limited privacy, often discriminatory, have extremely strict drug/alcohol rules that do not help addicts, etc.
In short: a shelter is not a home and does not solve the problem The solution is to literally give people a home first and then solve the other problems after.

While it is a positive and interesting approach, a few glaring differences with the US: Finland 1) is about 70 times smaller, or roughly 340 million less. 2) has a highly centralized, socialist system - and is a much smaller country - ie much easier to implement 3) is a highly homogenous culture

In Seattle we used to have Navigation teams to come alongside encampment to help re house people. It was a compassionate way to actually help people. I Lynnwood Washington they "clear encampments" in similar and compassionate ways.

Obviously not. As a society we we have more choices than "brutal sweeps and mass arrests for the crime of poverty" and "leave people to sleep rough." I'd rather we gave them housing. But since clearly we're not going to do that, I say if you're not giving them somewhere to go, leave them alone.
Every single time there's a sweep, the police say "We offered them housing but they refused services." When you dig in to it though, what they really did ranges from handing them the numbers from services that are overburdened and have no capacity, to a shelter with conditions they can't accept.
and by "conditions they can't accept" that can range from "have to give up all their belongings that don't fit in one bag, and in exchange they can sleep there 1 week in an open room." to "give up your pet" or "can't stay with you partner."
A friend of mine gave me the advice that if I ever find myself having to sleep in a congregate housing shelter, put everything you want to keep inside your shoes and sleep on top of them, or it'll get taken. He said he preferred sleeping outside to risking those shelters.
No shade on the shelters, they're trying. But when people choose not to go to them, even *if* they have capacity on a given night, there's reasons.
Fixing a problem takes work and dedication, optics, not so much.

City-led encampment sweeps & homeless enforcement actually makes outreach work much harder for the people doing that work to help people. If folks resist to all of their belongings being broken & thrown into the back of a garbage truck, they get fined & can also be put in jail for 6 months. Then...
They have to start over with even less than they had before & end up right back on the streets. In places like LA, 94% want shelter, but it's accessible to only about just 17%. We know what works - it's housing FIRST, with access to services 2nd. Busting through encampments...
& trashing all possessions, & pushing these people elsewhere without establishing housing FIRST is absolute cruelty & completely inefficient. There is not enough shelter, not enough housing, not enough services - THAT is why people live in encampments in the 1st place. Sweeps are NOT a solution.
They can talk about "expanding access" all they want but the reality is that's just talk. Go on & expand services, build navigation centers, increase housing options...do all of that FIRST & the encampments will disappear on their own once support is actually accessible to the people who need it.
Lastly, I don't know if you've ever spoken to anyone about their experiences in shelters, but shelters are rarely "better." They're often not safe or clean, & there are many limiting restrictions that make it unrealistic for many folks. Plus, shelters are only temporary & a very short-term bandaid.

I've heard only anecdotal complaints - often from addicts that I'm trying to speak to, who are angry and confused, and in need of multiple services. For example, "I can't believe they kicked us out!" "Were people given notice?" "Yeah, but they came anyway!" It's sorrowful, but not really valid.

I don't know of anyone who blames Newsom for stuff that Reagan did, but at this moment in time the reasons homeless people in California don't want to go to shelters are largely the same as the reasons homeless people in other places have not wanted to do that for the past ten years.
California's problem with shelters is something Newsom has not fixed; indeed, he took a case all the way to the Supreme Court so he could get permission to clear the encampments anyway.

Sure, but these sweeps don't do anything to address the problem long-term. Camps pop up again, and the people caught in the sweep are traumatized and missing belongings, often important belongings. We know how to solve homeless encampments. (And experienced experts are looking for work right now.)

From experience of having friends who had to stay at shelters; they're awful. If America didn't have awful urban planning laws and gave massive tax breaks and giant plots of lands to oligarchs; we'd have more than enough space for high density sliding scale housing like anywhere in Europe.

People can't be forced to stay in a shelter. If the general feeling is that shelters can be dangerous, then the shelter has to gain their trust first. And that isn't going to happen if they were forced to go there after experiencing state violence and having their belongings destroyed.
