I don’t have any first hand information regarding the DC deployment. I’m speaking from my own personal experience from 28 years in the guard in a state with frequent disaster deployments.

Buy food and throw away free meals. They will sleep on the floor and leave the cot at homestation. I love young enlisted Soldiers with all my heart, but they are young humans and they act like it.
Food is provided, but it’s not always the best. It’s typically catered by lowest bidder in these deployments. Every Soldier can grab a cot if they want it. I’m not there, so I can’t say anything for sure about their lodgings, only know from my own experience. Soldiers will buy Popeyes all day……
They will get their base pay only. At 30 days of continuous orders they are entitled to housing allowances and other benefits the Regular Army enjoys. They will stay on cycles of 29 days indefinitely to save funds. There is no money set aside for these deployments. It will affect disaster budgets.

Close, but not quite. NG Soldiers are paid a wage for their work. They can get excellent healthcare for about $150 a month for their whole family, $175 with dental. College is free in some states. They earn a retirement after only 20 years. It’s a solid, valuable work experience on a resume. Not bad

Soldiers pick up trash. It's part of the gig. Nobody is exempt. When you see trash on the ground you are expected to pick it up. It demonstrates that you care about the area you share with other Soldiers. They are not embarrassed by this. See my picture below. We picked up trash in the desert.
That was the whole point behind DOGE layoffs. They are quietly privatizing the government. They can't print more money, so they do a cash grab on the tax dollars. There is a finite amount of money to control in the private sector so they need the public funds. Cut programs to pay the wealthy. Gross.

One of the strengths of the National Guard is that, in general, they grew up in or near the communities to which they deploy. Anyone who has served in The Guard will attest that bullshit will only go so far. Appearances aside, The Guard is not the Army and the differences should be celebrated.

Watching the tickety-tok video of the ICE and NG roll through LA and I am struck by 2 things. 1. The NG lack machine guns because it’s insane to any Soldier to roll through their neighborhood with one on a turret 2. ICE has fucking machine guns mounted on turrets! Fuck off right now ICE!
Neat! That is a tactic we used in Iraq and Afghanistan. Freedom of maneuver means “we can go where we want, when want whether you like it or not.” That seems odd to conduct that operation in your own home country. I guess they must be scared little bunnies that needed to power flex for the media.
