Yet another banger from @docseuss.bsky.social. I highly recommend you read the first article first if you haven't, because I'm sequentialist and such beliefs are embedded in the core of my being. Also because it perfectly describes what games are missing. docseuss.medium.com/first-person...

Pritzker on Trump sending troops into cities: "He has other aims other than fighting crime... he would like to stop the elections in 2026 or frankly take control of those elections. He'll just claim there's some problem with an election and then he's got troops on the ground that can take control."

Pretty sure that's an 8th Amendment violation.

By law an enemy is ordinarily a foreign subject in some open hostility with the United States. There is no requirement for a formal declaration of war, though that does make the charge a lot easier to prove. For example, the AUMF functionally defined "enemies" without a formal declaration of war.
Some Say They Do (@pipsdontsqueak.bsky.social) reply parent
Enemies don't have to be declared.
Some Say They Do (@pipsdontsqueak.bsky.social) reply parent
You don't need war for treason. It also includes "adhering to [the United States'] enemies" or "giving them aid and comfort." Conviction requires at least two witnesses to the same overt act or a confession in open court.

For sure. The lesson is focusing on process over outcome is how prosecutors become...well, Kamala Harris style prosecutors. Paxton has his job because he's winning procedurally, not because he's factually innocent.

One of the most insightful things I've ever heard concerned gays and trans people in the military. A good friend who's an officer told me that if respecting gay and trans rights an order, it doesn't matter what troops personally believe, they'll comply. We need something similar. Make it law.
Some Say They Do (@pipsdontsqueak.bsky.social) reply parent
Not at all, I'm adding not criticizing. I think the paradox of tolerance coupled with the success of Republican cheating necessitates that the left (Dems are hopeless) go further then Mamdani and Planter to secure the future.

I know several people who listen to him with rapt attention. There's a reason he became popular enough that Ron Howard directed his memoir. I understand *you* don't see it but the appeal is not meant for you. Again, it's for people who care about style over substance and he knows how to bullshit.

Remember, this is also where we get Juneteenth. Texas celebrates the traitors at the Alamo, but there's also a deep connection with the immigrant experience. It's a study in contradictions. And it's bumbling along despite the oligarchy that runs it.
Some Say They Do (@pipsdontsqueak.bsky.social) reply parent
Sincerely doubt they will, Americans take a lot of their lives for granted. Separately, I think if you're not from Texas or haven't really been there, there's a certain fascination with it as a little fail state. But it's a place that pushes through despite Paxton and Abbott.

Jamelle, you're brilliant. Miller is the most dangerous person in this administration. He functionally controls the Stasi. RFK, Jr. has a lot of power, but his ability to harm is dwarfed by Miller's.

For *you*. Vance is incredibly charismatic and it's dangerous to ignore it. If you only listen to how he speaks and not what he's actually saying, he's very persuasive. Style over substance, as a Liverpudlian baker says, but that's what people gravitate towards.

I repeat: drugs are a hell of a drug. Bannon is Alex Jones with a less desperate grift. All this said, there is a Cheney now who's worse: fucking Stephen Miller. That self-hating Nazi shithead is the most likely reason we'll end up in Fallout. There's no one in the administration more evil.

It's truly fascinating how most people just do not understand we would already be in anarchy but for the American experiment being held together with the duct tape of underpaid bureaucrats doing their level best to not get fired for no reason while understaffed and underresourced.
Some Say They Do (@pipsdontsqueak.bsky.social) reply parent
I generally agree with this. I also think it's fine to learn lessons from people that were on the wrong side of history. Lee had some interesting tactical ideas that are worth looking at. He doesn't deserve any honors despite that.

Some Say They Do (@pipsdontsqueak.bsky.social) reply parent
Well Cheney had goals outside of himself. He had (and has, fucker isn't dead) a vision for the world. Bannon is more focused on himself than he is on some broader plan. And caring about his image is what's killing it.
Some Say They Do (@pipsdontsqueak.bsky.social) reply parent
Whatever their intentions, I increasingly feels like we're being pushed to the edge of a cliff. It's felt this way for a decade, but BLM and MeToo were ways to push back and stay away from the edge. The regime not giving a fuck this time invites a harder response.

Meanwhile, consider a movie like Encanto or Frozen. Banger soundtracks, but weaker stories that don't quite have the same appeal. Encanto does a little too much, it gets scattered, while Frozen has distracting plot holes. They're hits but not in the way Toy Story was.
Some Say They Do (@pipsdontsqueak.bsky.social) reply parent
My favorite Pixar movie is Ratatouille because again, simple premise that has something to say about it. Both Luca and Ratatouille are reactionary, but their message is positive. That's what makes Pixar work and why Up or Finding Nemo are classics. Brave is highly underrated in this regard.
Some Say They Do (@pipsdontsqueak.bsky.social) reply parent
I sort of agree with you but I think the issue is focusing on appeal over the story they're trying to tell. I personally think the best movie Pixar has made in a long time is Luca because it's a simple story that has something to say. That's the core of all Pixar's bangers.
Some Say They Do (@pipsdontsqueak.bsky.social) reply parent
Bannon could have been the current Dick Cheney, but he got greedy. The tendency of these grifters to shoot themselves in the dick is the left's biggest advantage. Cheney is harder. He wasn't just another grifter, he was the real deal and incredibly dangerous because of it.
Some Say They Do (@pipsdontsqueak.bsky.social) reply parent
It's dangerous to underestimate them. Vance is not charismatic to you or I, but if you care less about what he's saying than how he says it, he has an incredibly persuasive speaking style. He's like Bill Maher: great at seeming smart but he'll probably be exposed as a fraud by a MAGA Ben Affleck.

Sometimes the asshole is the rulemaker, sometimes it's the person who did the thing we must now design around. My favorite is the Onion Futures Act. Why is there a restriction on trading onion futures? Because some asshole cornered the American onion market one year and caused havoc.
Some Say They Do (@pipsdontsqueak.bsky.social) reply parent
My shorthand explanation for why laws/regs can be so unwieldy is the "some asshole" theory of the law. If you ever wonder why there's a rule that you can't do something or things must be a certain way, it's almost always because some asshole did something and now we have to have a rule about it.

Well-worth reading, @dynamicsymmetry.bsky.social is right that there's a difference between blaming Trump voters and demanding they take responsibility. We live in a society and that means even when something gets broken, and it isn't your fault or intention, you still have to fix it.
