He got the CA legislature to pass the map to put it on the ballot in November for 2026. He also created momentum to flip voter opinion on this tactic in about 2 weeks. Looks like it’s going to pass now.

I don't particularly agree with crediting Newsom himself for this - most of the folks who are plugged in enough to call their reps were pretty enthusiastic about redistricting from day 1, and I've not seen a whole lot of messaging from him about this specific issue
