Well, folks, they passed the "One Big Beautiful Bill." The vote was 218-214, with two Republicans siding with Democrats. I am going to catch up on some sleep after a 24+ hour workday, but happy to answer some questions here as I can. Whatcha got?
Well, folks, they passed the "One Big Beautiful Bill." The vote was 218-214, with two Republicans siding with Democrats. I am going to catch up on some sleep after a 24+ hour workday, but happy to answer some questions here as I can. Whatcha got?
What is the best resource to understand what is actually in this final version.
When will the bill's provisions take effect? Is there anything in the bill that puts Social Security Disability Insurance at risk?
Will Trump's promise to the House Freedom Caucus to block permitting requests for new battery energy storage, solar and wind be able to be challenged in court quick enough to keep up with growing demand for electricity or will most new demand be met by ramping up existing methane fueled plants?
Trump is nominated for a third term by a GOP Representative. Will he get it ?
What's the final impact on NEA/NEH/IMLS?
They will be tossed to the curb after the funding for the Garden of Heroes. That is now their sole function.
Why didn't Jeffries keep up his speech until after all the Republicans missed their holiday flights home? I appreciated the effort, but if you're gonna delay, why not go all out and effectively filibuster into the next day if you have "unlimited time" as the minority leader? Tough, but worth it, no?
Any chance of some blue states talking about pooling resources to cover healthcare across state lines? I remember when the Oregon Health Plan was founded some politicos or wonks were talking about cost sharing across multiple states. John Kitzhaber was legit, but a little too crooked for OR.
Did the senate parliamentarian changes stick? Or were they added back?
Have any Republican governors in smaller states like Mississippi proposed infrastructure improvements (i.e. broadband access) to address the administrative barriers caused by the new work and eligibility requirements in the bill?
No, but they’d probably say BEAD absolves them of that responsibility (the rural broadband deployment fund that’s about to be implemented.)
Did David Valadao explain his cave? He sounded like a hard "no" on Saturday. (I know, I know. Still.)
Did the ban on AI regulation go through? Under what circumstances does it apply, e.g. is it at all realistic to opt out of the federal funds it poison-pills or is that completely impractical for the states?
I was doing a semi-educated (as a lawyer but not a tax code or con law lawyer) read-over of the bill before it passed, and a lot of the stuff about agriculture was honestly beyond me. Can you summarize, or point me to a good summary of, what the crop subsidy, reference price, etc. stuff means?
I heard that the majority of the Medicaid and SNAP cuts are supposed to take place in 2028. I just wanted to verify if that is accurate and if that can be changed with a different reconciliation bill in 2028 under a different administration?
They want the next president to deal with the fallout, and they want to spend like there is no tomorrow in the meantime. Par for the course.
And if there’s a party split between the executive & legislative branches, the current situation will continue.
Well the status quo can be overcome with veto-proof blue majorities in Congress, even with a red POTUS. This obviously presumes the judiciary simultaneously demonstrates more fealty to Constitution and country than has MAGASCOTUS, however
When does the ice funding go into effect?
Should there be a democratic shift in mid terms and next presidential term, can any or all of this bill be reversed or changed?
Thanks for your coverage!👍
How long until we see the impacts? Are green energy incentives immediately off the table?
I am interested in the SSA email I received. I’m pretty sure I’ve been paying tax on my SSA. Are they saying that this is no longer necessary? Thank you.
Hi, I think a lot of us received e-mails from SSA saying that social security will no longer be taxed - and that somehow there is "enhanced deductions" (how much enhancement can you make to 0?) for those over 65. What part, if any, of this is true? Thank you!
i told them what i thought about this. if you feel similarly, you can too.
I replied too, only to get a reply that I couldn’t reply!
maybe they've been overwhelmed by responses from similarly pissed off citizens. or, contrariwise, turned it off because too many were arriving. in either case, we've made our point.
Not a single word is true
Is this why big balls moved to the SSA?
It does not say that Social Security will not be taxed. It is oblique for sure but it is talking about a new 6k deduction for three years, for those who pay tax on Social Security, it somewhat offsets that tax. It is a BS gimmick that will run the trust fund dry a year earlier.
Obviously it means if you are over 65 you can stop paying all taxes!
A totally misleading claim based on a very temporary extra deduction that lasts just 3 years. www.newsweek.com/social-secur....
old people granting themselves more privileges... kakistocratic populism :\
How the fuck did you get to "old people granting themselves?" Elderly folks didn't have a say in any of this shit. This was written by a few trump asslickers so Rs can claim they're strengthening SS and not screwing it.
"so Rs can claim they're strengthening SS and not screwing it." They're certainly not doing anything like that with medicaid—not a coincidence.
Where exactly did I say they were? Republicans are fucking over everything they can get their hands on 👈🏾 not up for dispute. People not at fault for putting that poison in that bill or that Rs voted for it are seniors, the elderly, "old people."
"The new Senate’s median age is 64.7 years" 117 members of congress are over 70 years old.. Pew Research Center share.google/KpkpKe0ZffXJ...
ffs, y'all just can't fucking help yourselves. The provision expires in 3 damn years. That's nothing. And now that I think about it some more, I'm betting Rs put that provision in there for 2 reasons: 1. So they can claim during 2026 and 2028 that they "strengthened" SS.
And that one is supported by the emails they're sending out. It's propaganda because they know seniors overall were hit really hard with this bill. 2. Making the provision last 3 years means it will come up during the 2028 presidential campaign. So whatever pos Rs put up can claim this provision
PLUS it will come up for a vote in congress. All Rs need to do is attach an extention for that provision to some poison pill bill and it puts Dems in a bind. When we take the House that strategy will change.
Any fucking way, if y'all could think past your current bigotry you'd get off all this ageism bullshit. So in short, you can fuck off with the rest of them.
How many of the people who voted for it are over or close to retirement age?
Again. That provision was most likely put in there so Rs could lie to seniors and not lose their support. The provision expires in 3 years.
So if seniors were responsible for giving themselves something, as the OP claims (again, a stupid claim), I think to fuck they'd make it permanent. Otherwise, what's the fucking point? So no matter how you spin this, what the op is claiming is bullshit.
You're trying to bash seniors as a whole when the only one's responsible for writing their shit AND fucking voting for it are Republicans 👈🏾 and that age group is old, middle, and fucking young, but all fucking stupid. And don't bother trying to move the goalposts again.
Best bit of poetry I read all day ❤️
Thanks for dispatching that bit of generational warfare propaganda with extreme prejudice. That sucker’s going to need a lot of burn cream. 🤣🤣🤣
Darlin'.
Im old and didn’t vote for this asswipe.
You’re off base; Congress is set for life with healthcare, etc. They did this to claim a tax break for seniors as a political stunt. Seniors had to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars into Social Security and many rely on it as sole source of income. It is NOT a privilege, it was earned.
why did they give a tax break to old people as a "political stunt" but halve healthcare for the poor? It's not a coincidence who they do "political stunts" for.
Likely because old people vote in higher % and Trump’s base includes quite a few old people. Trump / GOP are racists who coddle billionaires and corporations because they don’t respect regular people or people in need. They think corporate welfare is cool but abhor real people in need.
Old people didn’t do this. Trump and MaGA did this. Then lied to the old people again yesterday by using government website to send propaganda. Don’t be so damned simplistic in your thinking.
I’m just grateful this “old person” can still recognize bs when I read it.
I understood you received the deduction if you were over 65 regardless if you were on S.S. Is that wrong?
I replied is this a joke? WTF
I replied "Fuck off." got a reply that said "This email box is not monitored." and I also unsubscribed. I don't know why I was subscribed in the first place. It's true I created an SSA account to get my statement (I'm not retired) but this is the first email I ever got.
I got the SSA email too. I looked into it. The details: bsky.app/profile/alaj...
Is it a tax deduction or an exemption? Because a deduction might only take effect if you itemize, depending on how it's defined.
Google AI says regarding the expanded standard deduction: The BBB includes a temporary provision (from 2025 through 2028) for an *additional* tax deduction for individuals aged 65 and over.
OK, so it's an expanded standard deduction that conveniently sunsets at the end of Trump's term. Thanks for the clarification.
Creepy propaganda that kept me awake last night.
same
I don’t get how they think people aren’t going to figure out it’s a lie when..it doesn’t happen??
Well, I assume a lot of people living on SS don't have to pay taxes anyway. I did my mom's taxes this year (used one of the free filing vendors) and she didn't owe any taxes at all. I assume most seniors (except the wealthy) don't pay federal taxes on SS income.
seniors filing as individuals or a couple are subject to the same income limits. if one or both of you work your income is taxed based on deductions. There is no magic "click here for the senior" deduction. The poverty line for income is $21,500 and two people and the average SSI is $1100
So two people theoretically can just about make more from SSI than poverty income. The lowest bracket for a couple is the 10% bracket filing jointly is $23,850 - thus SSI might be taxable on poverty income.
The Trump bill ads an additional $6k or $12k for a couple deduction which is a cop out but that's how they make the claim work.
Also, that deduction is only good for 4 years.
I went back and re-read the email and it claims 90% of seniors won't pay tax on Social Security earnings. Then it states "additionally" there is a $6000/person over 65 years old tax deduction. So . . . they claimed TWO ways seniors will save on their taxes when there is only one.
Yes I just read that at least 90% already don’t pay taxes on SS
Not true at all.
I just looked it up and based on initial research it looks like about 60% of people do not pay taxes on social security
I was surprised they put an actual fact in their propoganda email so I'm not surprised to hear even the 90% claim is a lie.
LOL! 90% is the figure they included in the propoganda email.
That's an incorrect assumption. Someone who collects SS, but still working. Or collects SS and has a spouse still working and files jointly. Or collects SS and has a goodly pension. And so on. Lots of reasons that SS is still taxed.
I didn't state no one pays taxes on Social Security income. I found a statistic that about 64% of people with Social Security income pay no federal taxes.
50% of SSI income is added to your AGI and the SSI becomes 50% taxable at $25K AGI for single filers and $32K for joint. 85% for $7K/$12K above that respectively. AGI also includes Schedule B dividends and interest. Most people with a decent sized investment portfolio will pay taxes.
Um, my husband is on SS and we most definitely pay taxes. And we are definitely not what one would consider wealthy. That being said, I’ll take the deduction for the two years it’s offered but the deduction is in no way “no tax on SS.” I got the email and was appalled at how they lied.
Agreed- I definitely paid taxes on SS and I am in no way even financially comfortable by most measures. I’ll take a deduction, but will keep in mind it is temporary at best and probably doesn’t make up for the extra costs for seniors during each of those two years.
This is not true. My dad paid taxes on his Social Security.
Maybe he gets a lot more SS than my mom or gets other income. My mom gets a little bit from some pensions each month (hers and from a union my dad belonged to - he passed away a few years ago).
I do know my dad assumed he didn’t have to pay taxes for at least 15 years or more and oh boy when we discovered he hadn’t been paying taxes he not only had to repay everything. He had to pay the penalties too. Taxing SS is thanks Reagan. I don’t know the amt he got/ year. He also got a pension.
My mom still submitted her tax paperwork because she got a refund of what she paid. I'd be nervous to not submit my tax forms. My brother-in-law didn't file his tax forms for several years but he got caught and had to pay a lot to get it all settled.
Tax on SS happens as you exceed around 35K and hits 85% taxable at around 55K
Regan did this!
I’m an independent contractor, I get Social Security Survivor benefits and between my job and Social Security, I make a little over $36,000 in a good year. I owed $500 to those rancid fuckers.
Sorry you had to pay anything. My husband and I are nearing retirement and we paid over $24,000 in taxes for last year (we don't have enough deductions to itemize). I don't mind paying taxes if they go for things Congress authorizes but I DO mind paying if Musk & Trump redirect them.
I’m taking my sweet time paying.
Big Brother "raising" the chocolate ration (to a lower number) energy…
They don’t care. Their cult will believe it even as their SS benefits continue to get taxed.
Denial ain't just a river in Egypt
Denial ain't just a bay in Australia
I asked them if they were hacked.
"some asshole is sending stupid emails from your account."
I told them to fuck off
Good one!
I did not get this and I have an online account. I think it's propaganda spam.
i got that today too.
HA! I found mine-- in my Spam folder!😅😫
Did yours have white text at the top, mine had ‘hard to read green - in terrible contrast to dark blue’
Figured it was spam, and assumed there was a link down the page, to “check my statement” with a Nigerian prince. Even better that today’s prince of lies was involved. Shameful, like all of it.
Not just recipients. I suspect anyone with an account received this.
Yes, i got one and almost threw my phone across the room.
Yep, I got one and im in my 20's and still working. Dark.
True🙋🏻♀️
So disturbing - gut wrenching - that someone allowed this to be sent. We are clearly in a new era and it is not a good one.
It was planned. They had it ready to go once the bill passed. Government websites now propaganda.
I think it was the gift to the holdout Rs. "We'll take care of your PR problem"
This is what the MSM and democrats never seem to battle, the extraordinary yet horrific cons of Trump and Republicans.
Hi, None of it is true. Your federal tax on social security remains unchanged, because Senate Republicans used budget reconciliation to pass that scam bill, and that prohibits any changes to SS. So sorry, but that email is 100% political propaganda.
💯
I immediately put that email where it belongs 🗑️
Lol. Found mine in the "junk" folder.
How appropriate! I like your email provider already!
Lol. msn. First provider and still the only one I pay attention to. I probably flagged this as junk myself at some point! 😂
Please tell me what it is that you have to pay tax on for Social Security! I’m not being a smart Alec, but I’m on Social Security and are you talking about when I buy my food at Walmart? I have to pay taxes on that. Is that what you’re talking about?
If your combined annual income (SSI, pension, 401k, etc) is more than $25k per year, you need to file federal income taxes and a portion of your SSI is now taxable as income.
Thank you I appreciate that. I’m so far from that. Had a huge savings close to 1 million then my husband got leukemia and Blue Cross Blue Shield stop Pain and went to Medicare and of course that wasn’t very much so all of our savings is gone and he passed away so I am in the position of Being screw
You’re welcome, I t’s very confusing. I’m sorry for your loss and that our health care failed you and your husband.
And I am certainly not the only one that has been screwed by the lying Republicans that have done this every time they’re in the majority they do something to hurt the people, but they get richer
I opened it before coffee & it fucking ruined my already shitty day by making my stomach acids roil with pure disgust.
They expect us to respond so they can check us off as still alive?
No Tax on Social Security is a Reality in the One Big Beautiful Bill – The White House share.google/1WXrhekOp8OY...
My husband got this…🤬
Half your SSI is added to AGI. For single filers, if this is above $25K SSI is 50% taxable. Above $32K, 85%. Married filers: 50% if above $32K. 85% if above $44K. AGI includes dividends and interest received on Schedule B.
I didn’t know SSA was taxed and now I’m in big trouble
They'll see the benefits before the midterms, and lose them after the next presidential.
I thought this was a joke until I checked my email and got it too 😮
bsky.app/profile/devl...
Is this an attempt to drain SS faster without some extra money going back in?
I haven’t received one yet. The Hubs did, though. They’ll have to follow up through USPS. They can’t assume everyone has an email account.
I just got that one
📌
From what I understood, there will be a $6000 additional standard deduction for seniors (was $1950/$1550 in 2024) added to the standard deduction everyone gets, but that has nothing to do with taxable Social Security.
And goes into effect in 2026 after the midterms, and expires in 2028.
My husband asked “did Trump send this?” Yes. Yes he did.
Lies
I figure it's propaganda. I'm ignoring it.
I sent them a harshly worded reply. Schumer X style.
The email that was sent from SSA.gov looked very sketchy too!! Not as professional and had weird background..
How the tax breaks work out for different sections of the population
yeah got this this morning. i shouldn't check my email immediately after i wake up i never learn this lesson
Yep, got it! Don’t waste anytime!
I got it too. I replied, LIARS
I replied too! (Not monitored, but was so disappointed.
I was also sad when my reply bounced back.
Oh damn,I just got that email. Not monitored sheesh
Oh, but you can still email SSA! secure.ssa.gov/emailus/
You are so much kinder than I was! LOL
Same. I instinctively emailed them back and told them to go fuck themselves.
I was actually a little nervous about it. I could see them messing with people's SS just for sport
Um. Sorry . A portion Social Security has income is taxed for many, depending on other income coming in. I should know. I am one who pays tax on SS. New law allows an additional 6k standard deduction but does not do away with income tax for many recipients.
Exactly. That email has a blatant lie in it. There is no "provision" in the bill that eliminates tax on SS! The enhanced deduction is in addition to nothing.
Confirmed. And I have the email too.
The expanded standard deduction is for everyone, right? Not specifically for those on Social Security?
Yes. Has nothing to do with SS.
And that expires in 2 years, right? While the billionaire tax cut never does?
Only for taxpayers over 65.
Thank you. Do you have a good suggestion for a source to review the details of the bill?
This is a pretty good summary www.cnn.com/2025/07/04/p...
Thanks!
A big fat NO. Try finding that on their website. www.ssa.gov
It is 100% on that website, here is the direct link: www.ssa.gov/news/press/r...
Holy 💩, my bad🤦🏼♀️
It’s there.
That's shady as fuuuuuuuuuuuuuck
Yeeeeesssss…..
Well, Chuck Schumer’s gonna be pissed after he went to all that trouble to get the name of the bill changed 😁
I got this and forwarded it to my husband with the exact thing you just said. At what point will everyone admit that we have slid into authoritarianism? What’s that saying— it happens slow and then suddenly.
Nobody even knows the WORD authoritarianism, and nobody admits they're wrong any more, so never. Never is when everyone will admit that.
Why didn't I get this email?
Are you on SS? If so, maybe you were just lucky. It's not true.
I later found that ssa.gov had (with no advance notice) cancelled my direct login account. It seems that one must log on through login.gov or id.me.
I've had to use login.gov since 2022. I think it depends on when you first created your account. They've been moving away from ssa dot gov for awhile, sounds like they finally caught up to you! It's all good 😊
"It's all good?" WTF.
Hackers were always trying to get into the SSA website. The login was changed to make it more secure. That's what I meant by "it's all good". I had the old address from before saved, and had to change it, too. I was mildly annoyed, but I got over it. You will, too. Have a nice day!
But no excuse for changing the login procedure without advance notice. First world problem, but just more insults from TrumpDOGE.
No notice. Ever.
The same bill also increases our out of pocket medical expenses. Democrats need to make sure the Republicans get credit for the damage.
I deleted it right away. SS emails used to informative, but now it’s going to just send propaganda. F’em.
I reported it as spam
I got the email
I haven't received any notice yet.
Check your Spam folder, that is where I found mine. Thanks Gmail. ;)
Can you send me a copy of that email to jacob.bogage@washpost.com? Or you can DM me a photo here or on Signal at jacobbogage.87.
bsky.app/profile/mark...
I sent you a copy of mine as well.
Same here 🙋🏼♀️
Here’s a screenshot of part of mine
I got one too
I got the same letter as well
Look in your personal junk mail folder - that's where I found my propoganda email from a ssa.gov email address. It also states our tax dollars were used to distribute the email. I cant believe this is happening in the US.
You forgot the part at the bottom that rubs our noses in the fact that WE paid for the propoganda email with our tax dollars. I'd paste it here but it has my email address in it.
Done
It’s also on the website.. 🤦♀️
Yeah, I got one, too. Hit the “unsubscribe” link so fast.
Can we FOIA the replies SSA received to this email? The material there seems pure gold. If nothing else, a lovely coffee table book.
The email content does mimic a press release on the SSA Web site.
Yep. Got one too. Flagged it as spam in me Gmail. Right in the bin. 🗑️
Problem is it wasn't phishing or spam, it was pure disinformation. Thankfully Jacob responded and confirmed that.
True, but it was a communication I didn't want in my inbox. Ranks as spam by my book.
can the rapist now ignore court injunctions? can they cancel elections? We know that the current supreme court did not WANT to check his power but are they even able to now?
These permanent tax cuts for the wealthy, can the ever be reversed by a different administration in the future ???
What will be the first, most immediately apparent effects?
For ~~children & young adults~~ on SSI, did they receive *any* relief? Or is it just (not) for Seniors & a Press Release?
So, I was hearing the Medicaid cuts won’t take effect until after the midterms. Is that true or will they start now?
Is there anything to be done to prevent it from going into effect now? Is there any hope of impeachment happening?
📌
If there were only 432 votes cast, are the three missing votes from Democrats who died in office?
Oh wow, y'all actually had questions. Okay. Diving in.
No, not to my knowledge.
Midterms, not really, because you'll still have Trump in the White House with veto power. Next presidential, with unified Democratic control of Congress and the White House, yes. Things done by reconciliation can be undone by reconciliation.
They need beyond reconciliation…either reform the filibuster greatly or just completely abolish it.
A hypothetical future president will have to void everything this usurper regime purported to do. Note its illegitimacy under the 14th amendment; nullify every bill, every appointment (judicial or otherwise), every order, all at once. Most likely the next republics will have to clean up the mess.
Most of it takes effect now, upon Trump signing it into law. Nothing in the bill on SSDI. But the $6,000 "senior bonus" is going to have a huge hit on OASDI by lowering the threshold on the amount of FICA taxes collected. It puts OASDI in an even more fragile place budgetarily.
Thank you, the OASDI is what I had in mind.
What about mandatory sequestration from PAYGO rules? That will cut Medicare.
My political take from all this: We've seen the end of HFC as we know it. Joke on the Hill is that it's really the "Folding Caucus." It didn't really get win concessions. Those promises are hocus-pocus, wish-and-hope "promises." Trump & Johnson know HFC will ultimately cave on everything now.
If HFC was ever gonna draw a serious line in the sand on the national debt, this was the time to do it. Instead, they got some vague assurances about tariffs and potential executive orders and fake economic growth numbers. HFC got rolled. They know it. Trump knows it. Johnson knows it. We know it.
Here ya go. I read the bill so you don't have to:
did PBS/NPR funding survive?
Is this a gift link?
Hands down first noticeable effects will be the immigration money. This is **so much money.** It will make ICE the US's largest jailer. It will militarize the border and immigration operations even more. You thought mass deportations were intense now? Hoo boy. Buckle up.
And they are going to get very very sloppy about how they spend the money so they can please the Felon ASAP.
The end of the USA as we have known it. It’s already an unrecognizable country. It’s so cute how Dems keep trying to tell us “hey man just vote! in a year and a half!” The damage done in less than six months, does not bode well.
Wouldn't be surprised by this, especially in the Northeast or Pacific Northwest, but not something I follow super closely.
Right now.
