I can do as much harm with a hand gun as an AR-15 as both are, unless modified, Semi-Automatic firearms. AR, to be clear, means Armalite Rifle and not assault rifle. Yes the 5.56 round is nasty...but a .45 ACP Hollow Point can cause equally traumatic wounds.

Not necessarily. I don't believe they ever intended weapons of war to be in the hands of every member of the population. The did, however, intend that the citizens who made up the militia to protect their states & communities, should have free access to the weapons they needed as part of that.

And said militia members could equally well do that by storing their weapons at an armory or gun club. We have one near my home and I do not mind their practicing even after standard business hours or on the weekends. Small price to pay to not have them wandering around shooting people.

IDK about other states, but states I'm familiar with don't allow those super high velocity rounds for hunting (except "varmints", i.e. not food animals). They will destroy any meat value because of the way they liquify flesh through shock. It's what makes them so lethal.

I can tell the diff between a Ruger mini-14 & an AR-15, even if both use the same ammo (.223). An AR-15 isn't a long rifle which needs to be handled using both hands & it has an ergonomic design which facilitates spraying bullets from the hip. It's meant to shred pumpkins & humans, not hunting.

They are fun to shoot, I won't pretend they aren't. And yes, they CAN be used for hunting, but they aren't really needed for that. And in many cases they're the worse option. I use a bolt action .270 for deer. If you need more than 2-3 shots to drop a deer, you're just a bad shot.
