I agree. But they Mayans destroyed jungles for agricultural purposes which led to their eventual demise. They weren't in the business of preservation.

For their location, it was on that scale. They denuded most of the Yucatan, southern Mexico and northern Central America. It temporarily allowed their population to explode and then they exceeded the carrying capacity of the land. It's happening all over again.
