I agree entirely with what you say, but I've spent 3 months trying to get my MP, Kemi Badenoch, to say something about people in her party and in general who argue that immigrants who have taken citizenship, my own partner and children, are not truly British. She won't.
One might have thought that an ethnic minority opposition leader would be in the perfect position to step up at a time like this, but unfortunately she is both unpleasant and lethally stupid.

So people who’ve fled death & torture are going to be denied the chance to live with their families- who may themselves consequently be exposed to the same dangers- and I’d suggest not a single Reform voter will vote Labour as a result while other Labour voters will abandon them in disgust
It's quite hard to reconcile the Labour leadership now with who they were (or purported to be) in opposition. Such a massive disappointment. I resigned my party membership a few months in.
I wouldn’t have thought many Labour MPs came into politics to strip the rights of torture survivors to be reunited with the spouses & children. They need to take a long hard look in the mirror & ask whether Starmer, Cooper & Reeves are really the leadership their careers should be remembered with.

Nobody is brave enough to do that because all they are trying to do is court voters from what they think is a majority shift to the right through 'legitimate concerns'.
If, and there is no single silver bullet here, they were to make it safer and simpler for people to seek asylum, without those people feeling that they have to use irregular routes, then they could reduce channel crossings, thereby reducing the pictures on front pages. 2/
This is something which is insufficiently pointed out by people keen to bang on about 'small boats' - there is no route to crossing the channel to seek asylum other than in small boats. Governments have created this situation in large part through the carrier liability fines.
It is also important to recognise that actually seeking asylum, of which about 99% of those crossing the channel do, is not only not illegal, no matter the route, but also a secondary consideration to actually being reunited with families or communities. 8/
Labour's latest act of pure cruelty in talking about further restricting family reunification routes is a perfect example of making things worse. When you close these routes you don't change why people seek asylum in the UK, you just force them to use irregular routes to do so. #r4today 7/
