It’s been clear to me for a while that the GOP won’t survive MAGA, and MAGA won’t outlive Trump, but it’s been pretty funny to see the Democrats consistently respond to these easy victories in the least politically savvy way possible.
I figured after his failed campaign they just liquidated him and recycled the materials. Never seen another human being who looked and behaved more like he was born fully formed from a vat at age 30.
The current anti-trans bathroom stuff going on in the UK would also prohibit trans men from women’s restrooms on the basis of making the women there uncomfortable. It’s always been about removing trans people from public life, with the fairness of gendered spaces as an excuse.
There was a big brouhaha a year or two ago about a trans boy who was banned from competing against other boys in wrestling and was forced to compete against girls instead. Unsurprisingly, the anti-trans folks complained about that as well.
When a teenager is forbidden from competing in team sports on the basis of being trans, for example, it’s difficult to argue that *that* is the outcome we should go with just to be safe. Far better to err on the side of not further alienating a vulnerable minority.
There is plenty of benefit of learning from science, but the current debate and blanket bans is based on transphobia and not science. Trans people have been competing in sports for decades and observably haven’t swept the field, banning them now until proven otherwise is a policy based on exclusion
The entire issue is an intentionally crafted wedge issue against trans rights by the right wing, to engage in it as an honest discussion rather than a political attack is itself ceding ground to them

I think most people who sat out intentionally did so because “anyone but Trump” isn’t a strong motivating message, especially when 4 years of not-Trump didn’t make the danger go away at all. Republicans winning will always be an existential threat, it can’t be a perpetual excuse to do the minimum.

I’m not giving up on voting yet but it is a bit demoralizing being yelled at by idiots for not doing something I did, when I live in a state that went blue. I did everything I could and contributed to the maximum amount of electoral votes possible.
I had to live in a hotel for three months when my house caught on fire and had to be repaired. It was a nice one - an extended stay hotel with a kitchen and a separate bedroom - and my insurance covered 100% of it, and it was still completely miserable after about a week.

The only reason anyone is talking about trans athletes and trans kids is because Republican strategists decided to hammer on it as a wedge issue to divide LGBT rights. If you agree with them that it’s a “complicated issue” that we need to debate you’re falling for their propaganda.
