I am similarly fortunate. I have wooded city owned land behind my house. I also enjoy visits from deer, foxes, raccoons, etc. Lately we have a doe and her 2 spotted fawns hanging around. Love it!

Can and will state and local police enforce this law against federal troops?

And nowadays we talk to computers. And the computers don't want us to talk to a human. They will give us an endless loop of frustration in an effort to keep us from talking to a human. Does that scare anybody besides me?

Twin spotted fawns greeted us at the end of our driveway today as we came home after breakfast. #nature

Yesterday we had a relaxing family day at the game, even though the Brewers lost to the Phillies. A big THANK YOU to everyone who had to work on Labor Day. I propose a law mandating quadruple or quintuple pay for anyone required to work on Labor Day. Encourage employers to close for the day.

I'm from Wisconsin, but I love the Porkies, one of the few true outdoor gems in the Midwest. So much of our environment has been used and abused. We should be saving the few remaining places just for their peace and beauty. We need that at least as much as copper.

When I bought my Chevy Bolt in 2018 you rarely saw an EV here in Wisconsin. Even Teslas were not common. Now EV's are everywhere. The U.S. lags much of the world in the transition, but the change to electric is inevitable.
Raymond Schrab (@raymondschrab.bsky.social) reply parent
That's exactly the point. They want a case to put before SCOTUS, and SCOTUS will kill any remaining vestiges of the VRA. We need Supreme Court reform.

I could do that. I do it on my hikes. But in a movie theater? How would I get my popcorn? I can't go to a movie without popcorn.

Bluesky says I have reached 500 followers, with no starter packs or memes, just posting things that interest me. But my son says the internet is dead, just bots following bots. So now I'm asking, how many of you are a bot? Will all bots please raise your hand? Oh, I forgot...bots don't have hands.

Last week I hiked the La Budde Creek section of the Ice Age Trail. Just 5 miles each way, with overnight at a dispersed camping area. I don't like going to bed all sticky, so I used my Sawyer Squeeze water filter and CNOC bag to take a shower. Then I slept almost 12 hours! #hiking #backpacking

Today I hiked from the beach at Pike Lake to the top of Powder Hill and back, 3 times. About 9 miles, and 1,100 feet of elevation gain. Getting in shape for a backpacking trip. Meanwhile, everybody else was soaking up the sun. I know, I'm just not that smart. 😅 #hiking

Took a break from hiking today, and got some beach time in on Lake Michigan. This is Terry Andrae State Park here in Wisconsin. Besides miles of beautiful beach, it has extensive sand dunes, hiking trails, and camping.

Is there an unrestrained 2nd Amendment right to guns? Debatable. Even some conservative Supreme Court Justices thought guns could be regulated. Recall the phrase, 'a well regulated militia'. In any case, there is certainly no right to 50 round quick change ammo clips. Outlaw them. 5 is enough.

The view from the top of Powder Hill, a glacial kame in the Pike Lake unit of the Kettle Moraine State Forest. I come here because it's tied with Holy Hill as the highest point in southeast Wisconsin. No mountains around here. From the beach up to the top is 350 feet elevation gain. #hiking

Just saw Naked Gun. Yes it's over the top satire of cop movies, but also evil billionaires. There's the comically disastrous effort of the bad guy to build self-driving cars. But he's also developed a device which controls people's emotions thru their digital devices. Elon Musk? Tesla? Twitter?

Check your deductibles. My van was a total loss, and its all covered because I have 0 $ deductible on my comprehensive insurance. Unfortunately, my family member who had her SVU crushed by trees on my driveway, has a $500 deductible. Comprehensive insurance is cheap. Get 0 $ deductible on it.

It doesn't even take a hurricane. Last weekend we had a 100 year rain here in Wisconsin. Or even a 1,000 year rain by some reports. It was devastating. Dropped multiple trees on 3 vehicles on my driveway. Flooding in Milwaukee. What if such events start happening once a month? Once a week?
Raymond Schrab (@raymondschrab.bsky.social) reply parent
Same here. Keeping it simple makes for less stress. My backpacking hobby has reinforced this. You have to choose your gear carefully, because you have to carry it all on your back for miles. Bring only what you really need. This means food, water, shelter, safety gear, and a good night's sleep.
Raymond Schrab (@raymondschrab.bsky.social) reply parent
I hope I can get out to that part of the country someday, and do some hiking. Just beautiful!
Raymond Schrab (@raymondschrab.bsky.social)
My van was crushed under trees last weekend. I could fit a kayak in the back, plus bikes, even a 9 foot dinghy. Then I'd hook up to my camper trailer and head out. I could go biking, kayaking, fishing on small lakes, and use it as base camp for day hikes. I had it for 10 years. Gonna miss that van!
Raymond Schrab (@raymondschrab.bsky.social)
I've been dealing with insurance adjusters and tree clearing crews for a week now, after storm dropped multiple trees on multiple cars on our driveway. What a mess. But I have to keep my hiking legs fit. I have an exciting backpacking trip coming up. So I did 6 miles today. #hiking #backpacking

100 year rainfall last weekend brought this jumble of trees, including this gigantic oak, down on 3 cars at our house as we watched the Packer game. Fortunately, nobody hurt. But, I'm told we've had multiple 100 year rainfalls in the past few years! Strange. I wonder why?

20 years ago we took our kids to that very spot. We had to prompt them to get out of the car and look at it. One quick glance and they got back in the car. Reading a biography about President Harding recently made me think about what was considered scandalous 100 years ago, versus now. I truly realized how far backwards we have gone as a nation since then. Its very sad. I recommend 'Warren G. Harding by John W. Dean'. #history
Raymond Schrab (@raymondschrab.bsky.social)
John Dean grew up near Warren Harding's home. His interest resulted in this biography of a president many consider corrupt. But Harding never enriched himself, and based on circumstantial evidence only, fired the 1st Director of the VA, who was crooked. Trump makes them look like amateurs. #history

We've had 7 inches of rain at our house in past 22 hours, and still raining. We have storm damage. But I had my hammock set up in the trees behind my house, testing my new windsock. The quilt I had in there is still dry. Amazing. Hammock and tarp setup will keep you dry and comfortable!

The Holy Hill, Wisconsin, property includes a side trail up a separate kame, with this 24 ton glacial erratic boulder right at the very top. Is it coincidence that it's at the very top? Or was the kame bigger, but eroded away until the boulder was exposed, which then stopped the erosion? Any ideas?
Raymond Schrab (@raymondschrab.bsky.social)
I don't always look for elevation gain when I hike, but when I do, I go to Holy Hill. This church property includes a cluster of glacial kames which are some of the highest points in southeast WI, and 2.5 miles of the IAT. Today I got 900 feet of elevation gain in 7 miles there.

Companies will charge as much as they can, moderated only by competition. If prices of competing foreign goods go up due to tariffs, American companies will raise their prices. It's capitalism. Conservatives love it, so you'd think they might understand how it works.

Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Stowe, VT, built at the urging of Maria von Trapp, honors Brother Joseph Dutton. He served in leper colony in Moloka'i for most of his life. This is depicted in haunting paintings throughout. Some Von Trap family members also became missionaries, in New Guinea.

The 2 older sons, 1 a doctor, the other a trained cellist, joined the U.S. Army and fought the Nazis. (The 3rd son was too young.) Upon return to Vermont, one son built this stone chapel as a memorial to his fallen fellow soldiers. Today, you find it along the trail, peaceful, among the trees.

Today, the lodge implies wealth, but these refugees were penniless, survived only by forming their singing group. They built their first home and lodge with their own hands; 3 boys, 7 girls, parents. I found remains of an old spring house on hill above the lodge, likely a source of their water then.
Raymond Schrab (@raymondschrab.bsky.social) reply parent
A correction here: there were 3 boys and 7 girls. The youngest son was too young to serve in WW2. He is the last surviving of the children of Georg Von Trapp.

Captain Georg Von Trapp lost his father at 4, joined Austro-Hungarian Navy at 14, decorated for service in Boxer Rebellion in China, most successful Austrian submarine commander in WW1. When Nazis annexed Austria, Hitler demanded he join Nazi navy. He refused, fled to USA, left everything behind.

Sound of Music was on TV last night. We just got back from Vermont, where we spent 2 days at the Von Trapp Family Lodge. Here's what it looks like now. But the story behind it is that they came here almost penniless, refugees from the Nazi takeover of Austria. This is an amazing family story.
