Sharing my favorite response so far. It’s so clear that the powers that be are trying to choose Newsom FOR us. I’m happy to let him cook on getting redistricting done in CA, but there’s SO MANY OTHER OPTIONS for an actual primary. Walz and Pritzker at the minimum.

I don't get how people don't realize that a technology that replaces junior and entry level positions in a field destroys that field. There's no skipping steps. You have to be a junior before you can be a senior, and if you don't have senior people, you don't have a field.

Though even more: the fact that our gov’t is off the fucking rails, and no1 can predict what our future will be, is also a factor. People don’t want to bring another person into a world that looks like it might end up being much more miserable than it is now, if these regressive authoritarians win.

I can only speak for the US, but norms have shifted BECAUSE of the economic realities. I don’t think they can be separated. The fact that affording kids or a home seems ever more impossible, is part of why priorities changed. Regression in MAGA men’s attitudes towards women’s rights is a reason too.

I think said saboteurs expected Democratic voters to stay blind to it, or just give up. For a few months, social media was FLOODED with nihilistic doomer bots. They didn’t expect it’d have the opposite effect: sparking the most determined effort to takeover and fix a party in 15yrs. It’s not over.

California and Florida are on opposite ends of the school-closure spectrum and the differences in test scores are a wash. Some individual schools and districts definitely stayed closed too long but it just isn’t the case that this is some huge, obvious, foreseeable blunder.

Neither Florida nor California saw a statistically significant change in 4th-grade reading performance on the National Assessment of Educational Progress between 2019 and 2022. Meanwhile, Florida's 8th graders performed worse on the reading exam in 2022 than in 2019, while California's 8th graders' performance was unchanged. Both states performed worse on the 4th- and 8th-grade math assessments in 2022 than in 2019 Despite their states' similar performance on NAEP, which places both states above the majority of the rest of the country, the two governors accused each other of overseeing some of the worst learning loss in the country.

This ‘blue states closed schools too long’ narrative is becoming increasingly entrenched in the Polite Center but it’s arguable at best. Republican states had far more deaths during COVID and their students have roughly comparable learning loss.

Tweet from Joshua J. Friedman: Plaintiffs: No. Possible some children might be in that situation, but everything we could find on short notice is children not in this situation. Judge: Mr. Ensign you saying that *all* these children have parents who are requesting their return to Guatemala? DOJ: That's what I've been told Tweet from Joshua J. Friedman: Judge: During recess, I read provision you cited and then the complaint. Every one of 10 named plaintiffs says they are *afraid* of being sent back to Guatemala. (Reads aloud from declarations.) Doesn't line up with what govt is saying. This is why we have courts.

I beg media and politicians to not back down on calling this regime's authoritarian power grabs exactly what they are. Do not allow them to control the narrative or commit accusation in a mirror. People already see through MAGA and its collaborators' patterns of manipulation. Truth is on your side

These rumors and timing always seem to match up so conveniently with whoever and whatever the regime needs to demonize, discourage, or divide next. They can’t let their opposition build too much unity, momentum, hope, or public support. Screw every Machiavellian traitor in/around our govt and media.

We need to build some real social stigma around being afraid of cities. You don't have to like them or live there, but a politics built this strongly around watching TV and going "ewww" is embarrassing, and people should be embarrassed by it. It's like "fear of werewolves" being your top issue.

I don’t know why anyone is still bothering to give a shit about the portion of strategists and media that are clearly just trying to keep oligarchs in power. They’re so obviously a waste of time and energy. Focus on the victories and what’s working, ignore the deadweight. Should be self-evident.

this piece is really good and this passage is 100% correct. but it’s also kind of wild to be sitting on the precipice of obliteration here and still debating whether one of the only two major political parties should have core values and fight for them.

At the #txlege, many people think of "points of order" (POOs) as technical errors on a bill -- a missed deadline or un-dotted "i." But the consistent points of order on this session's police secrecy bill -- currently SB 15, which died yesterday, again -- reveal a darker, more disturbing pattern. 🧵

After being kidnapped, trafficked overseas, and spending 160 days away from his family, Kilmar Abrego Garcia—who just finally reunited with family—was taken into ICE custody after his immigration check-in. The Trump regime is a white supremacist terrorist organization posing as the U.S. government.

Let’s be clear: deporting Kilmar Abrego Garcia to Uganda makes no sense—it’s not his home country. Nothing about this process has been fair. ICE is targeting him with cruelty. This is the weaponization of government, not justice.

This also applies broadly to anyone left-of-fascist who actually wants to win or make substantial improvement to society. Have sincerely held principles, and advocate for them sincerely in your own words. Stop taking finger-wagging from out-of-touch consultants as gospel & just be a real person.
