They also changed my solar credit structure so my extra credits from summer expire before I could use them in winter. I got a power bill due to incandescent Xmas lights the next year. They also do hit pieces in the news on how solar ppl like me aren't paying our fair share.

What confuses me is where do they get the cash? Guns and ammunition are not cheap.
Matt (@schmagmattis.bsky.social) reply parent
Before I got solar my electric bill in the summer was 250/mo. Climate affects usage of energy. Bills are going up as monopolization continues coupled with infrastructure improvement. Data centers are increasing demand. This subsidizes their large usage charging all higher rates.
Matt (@schmagmattis.bsky.social) reply parent
That is extremely creepy. I don't believe people who fantasize about violence are stable enough to own weapons. When I worked in armed security I avoided people like that.i I believe that government failure to collect data causes blind spots.

I understand you want published research and there are websites dedicated to such things. If we only discuss using our biases nothing changes. Would you be willing to consider my position that guns in the hands of trained, responsible, individuals deter violence?
Matt (@schmagmattis.bsky.social) reply parent
If I took time to look up research would it even change your mind? Why not look at areas we might agree with such as red flag laws? Please realize I don't Google research to back my position then post a link. I have to read its methodology and look for bias or flaw. It's a quirk of mine.

To me it's like comparing drinking and driving to people who drink. The statically inherent risk goes up. Also the study cited is regarding cohabitation with firearms owners. Correlation does not equal causation.
Matt (@schmagmattis.bsky.social) reply parent
My experience is much different. I held 2 guys at gunpoint for 20min once. The math teacher in me questions the sampling choices of the article as well. If you have guns in your house you're more likely to die from one. If you're a safe gun owner likeliness goes down.
Matt (@schmagmattis.bsky.social) reply parent
I have always told my daughter something that seems appropriate. "You are a bold, brilliant and beautiful woman, don't let the little boys waste your time." I also gave her a 9mm for protection. You should start a GoFundMe for hiring a pro hacker and buying a gun. I'd contribute $5 to see him doxd.

One thing I wish I could get the general public to understand is the fact you will pay taxes for education. The difference is whether the taxes are allocated for incarceration or creating a stable education population. I pay more property taxes for jail because people don't understand this.

It's definitely terrorism and needs to be pursued as such. Shooters often seek soft targets with the intent to cause fear. Luigi did murder IMHO. The guy in MN did terrorism. Many shooters are known to their local community as unhinged. Enforcement of existing laws would help a lot.

I support transfers at police stations with background checks. I believe there should be a financial liability for those who sell a weapon without a proper transfer. I've only sold one gun to a stranger and did my due diligence. He asked if the paperwork we did was normal. It's not unfortunately.

I have no perfect answers but see actionable trends. www.theviolenceproject.org/key-findings/ Maybe we start holding enablers to account for access to guns. Maybe we provide better healthcare and mental services. No one strategy will fix it. We have serious social issues. Gun violence is a symptom.

They also teach using the Trump Bible in many schools. Oklahoma is where I was born. The best thing I ever did was move away. I was poor and headed down the foster care/school to prison pipeline.
Matt (@schmagmattis.bsky.social) reply parent
There are too many cases of existing laws not followed. I like the idea of red flag laws. Ultimately I think we need a combination of laws and policies. I dealt with a student last year who brought a "gun" to school. He faced no consequences even though it was an assault. Maybe we pay attention.
Matt (@schmagmattis.bsky.social) reply parent
I don't know about a majority unless we categorize by age. I do know there are no perfect solutions as laws don't stop crimes. Maybe a requirement of enlistment to the military for younger people to have access to military style weapons. I think there are things we can do.

As a "Bubba," with an arsenal, I want effective gun control too. I am torn to bits inside every time I hear of children dying in gun accidents (adult negligence). Mass shootings and accidents need to be a relic of the past.

I've been told it's inappropriate to comment on political things when I say it's my job to educate my students not police them. Statistically speaking if you have a shooter they were likely a student at your school. I couldn't shoot one of my students.
Matt (@schmagmattis.bsky.social) reply parent
Well intentioned idiots made that call. I worked security for a number of years prior to teaching. Threats of violence cause escalation. My state allows concealed carry in school. That would be a complete recipe for disaster. We need to act to prevent shootings, not acclimate.
