This was much later, about 1989? But i lived in the same town as this boy, in a safe neighborhood. He lived near gangs i didnt know existed until he told me. He couldve easily been in my nerd level classes, but was not encouraged by his parents, and so was just getting by and playing football.
Sharing stories is so important. I was in the nerdy group in school, fairly privileged, and i remember the day a black kid that was funny and smart showed me the knife fight scars on his chest. I knew then that his life was wildly more unfair than mine, my eyes opened.
I was lucky and grew up with parents who always had people from other countries coming/going at our house. I got to see more of others experiences, foreign students, etc, and I reallllly noticed the difference in my own views to some others in my school who had a narrower view.

There were times lookin after dad that i was more worried about mom dying from exhaustion than i was about dad. I would give her breaks as much as possible but when you are a senior lookin after a senior....you get tired.
It was playing some tricks on him but he passed away before it got really impossible to reason with him. He had bad days, but good ones too. Mom and i were so relieved we never had to put him in a home. That wouldnt have been good for him, and we wouldve been miserable about it.

Thanks i try! Mom isnt as badly off as my dad was with parkinsons, at least her health issues are manageable for now, so i have a reprieve until she needs more care and i probably will need to move in with her. Just tryin to enjoy the good stuff with her as much as I can. Time is always too short.
