After the Obama administration showed that being credentialed and polished couldn’t be used as a goalpost anymore, saying what you felt like, or being able to reject “the establishment” became a boon. Even though only privileged people could have a track record of doing so.

That part. Also people critiquing Jeffries pausing, when he’s code-switching. He doesn’t pause whatsoever when he’s on Roland Martin, but he does use AAVE a lot more there. It’s similar to how, once POC showed they could be establishment, suddenly, being “establishment” became a detriment.

Anyone who wants to get Democratic leadership to take progressivism seriously as an approach to flipping seats should highlight the progressives who HAVE flipped seats. Velshi platformed Rep. Underwood, and I commend him for that, and Rep. Horsford would be another good person to platform.
sjoyner1965.bsky.social (@sjoyner1965.bsky.social) reply parent
Tbf, I will say that Velshi does get into Republicans. But I will also say that tearing into Democratic leadership isn’t as effective as, say, using that energy to platform progressive candidates. As it stands, progressivism does not have the track record in flipping seats that centrism does.

It’s therefore not surprising that they would do this. Beyond grifting, MAGA uses this language, because to them, their practice of racism is no different from what they consider their practice of “Christianity.” So their churches are viewed as hubs for white people, besieged by non-white people.
sjoyner1965.bsky.social (@sjoyner1965.bsky.social) reply parent
That is, rather than be made to pay taxes to fund social programs for non-white, non-Christian people, you elect a government to slash taxes, and then fund a church that serves as the social safety net for “your” people. Many white supremacists can’t distinguish between racism and their church’s.
sjoyner1965.bsky.social (@sjoyner1965.bsky.social) reply parent
IMO, it’s that churches emerged as the last and only legal bastions for white supremacy after Johnson’s term. Many churches and new Christian movements emerged as a means to maintain segregation and exclusively white communities. It also offered a means to retain the benefits of the New Deal.
