It's definitely possible! I don't *think* she tested me and it wasn't ever anything severe, just like a couple days of feeling sick. I was 5 at the time so I have no memory of it at all. A few months later I was in the hospital with a blood sugar of 500+

Like sure there's a falloff and you can only feasibly limit the failures so far, but you can also eliminate a lot of idiocy by designing things well! There's no stopping a human who is bound and determined to be an idiot but that's not most users!

I.. I mean. Again, this is.. not an escalation that the civilians will win. Like.. there *aren't* really options, and the funding and production differences really don't make it very possible - if civilian "deterrents" become a threat, there will be more research done to defeat them.

"I want to annoy the cops, so I'm going to go get absolutely hammered and drive around the whole city and get on their nerves!" Similar energy. Devote your life to doing something about this, not to self-destructive technology battles you're not going to win.

Well, if you want to play *that* game, they already have the technological advantage, and it puts the user at far more risk than it protects. But sure, whatever, go do what you want. Don't be surprised when they find you. Because that's the other part about them - they're very, very easy to find.

Or they just called the ISP and had them shut it off for 15 minutes and called when they left? That's... Way easier than using a jammer or unplugging things.

19/8/2025, 1:43:56 AM | 1 0 | View on Bluesky | view

Profile picture Sloosecannon (@sloosecannon.io) reply parent

Uh, no. And keep in mind that while you're playing with that jammer to annoy the cops, you're also risking random people's lives. The firefighters across town? They're affected. A neighbor calling 911 because they're involved in a domestic? Affected That's what I mean by *emergency communications*

19/8/2025, 1:42:34 AM | 0 0 | View on Bluesky | view

Profile picture Sloosecannon (@sloosecannon.io) reply parent

The cops don't need a signal jammer to shut down your WiFi. There's a couple things to unpack, but there's probably a confusion of terms here. They could: 1. Shut down your Internet which would have the desired effect. 2. Get the ISP to shut off the modem/WiFi router on their end. Or 3, yes, jam it

19/8/2025, 1:39:34 AM | 1 0 | View on Bluesky | view

Profile picture Sloosecannon (@sloosecannon.io) reply parent

(I mean, the practical reason they don't have broad spectrum "knock everything over" type jammers is because, frankly, the cops use cell phones and emergency communications too and don't like being without them!)

19/8/2025, 1:07:36 AM | 4 0 | View on Bluesky | view

Profile picture Sloosecannon (@sloosecannon.io) reply parent

That's just not true though? The cops.. really do not have jammers. Hell, the military doesn't even really use jammers in a non-wartime sense. And when the cops *do* use them it's a very specific type of jammer for a very specific reason, which generally means it was.. not the stuff you can find

All I'm saying is following orders to march in a park and put on a big show are a big difference from "stop the elections", and the second carries much more risk of the troops just flat ignoring it

18/8/2025, 10:01:33 PM | 3 0 | View on Bluesky | view

Profile picture Sloosecannon (@sloosecannon.io) reply parent

There's a certain choice you have to make when you are in that position. "Do I jeopardize my life, freedom, and livelihood to disobey this order?" The things the military has done are performative statements with very little actual risk. But if that changes, the calculation for that changes too.

Now I could see this being a front/back type of thing, which sorta seems like what you linked above - the phone has 2 relatively wide-angle antennas for the front and back and selects the stronger of the two, and that would work reasonably well.

6/8/2025, 5:09:47 PM | 0 0 | View on Bluesky | view

Profile picture Sloosecannon (@sloosecannon.io) reply parent

Right but like.. ok you're walking in a hallway and you turn 90 degrees, with your phone facing forward. At that point, if you're using a directional array, your connection is just *gone*. And it's probably quick enough that it's going to take a bit to recover.

6/8/2025, 5:09:47 PM | 1 0 | View on Bluesky | view

Profile picture Sloosecannon (@sloosecannon.io) reply parent

This isn't an issue on the tower because the subscriber's angle changes much less often relative to the antenna array (and you can easily compensate for this by widening the beam slightly and adjusting as you move)

6/8/2025, 5:00:49 PM | 1 0 | View on Bluesky | view

Profile picture Sloosecannon (@sloosecannon.io) reply parent

Well, I mean, the issue isn't really knowing which way the subscriber is facing compared to the base radio, or even building the hardware, it's "is it worth dropping the connection for long enough to adjust the beam-forming array when the phone's angle is changed", which happens very often

6/8/2025, 4:59:17 PM | 1 0 | View on Bluesky | view

Profile picture Sloosecannon (@sloosecannon.io) reply parent

(mostly because combining "highly directional" with "often moves rapidly and changes the direction it's facing" is not an easy problem to solve!)

Profile picture Sloosecannon (@sloosecannon.io) reply parent

Unless I'm *far* behind on 5g tech (which, admittedly, isn't exactly my field of expertise), my understanding is that the phased/directional "beam forming" is done at the tower, not at the phone. I can't actually think of a way to reasonably do that and maintain a directional beam on a phone

I guess I'm saying (based on personal and second-hand experience) that you can absolutely learn at school without making good grades (and the opposite is true as well), and if the objective of the system is for people to *learn*.. grades don't necessarily measure that?

Because often grades are used as some kind of indicator of more than that, as are test scores. If you're a straight D student you're "just too stupid/lazy/etc to get good grades". Which again I'm.. not sure what, if any, the "fix" is for this?

I have believed for a very long time that schools, and this kind of test in particular, are optimized for the kind of person who excels at taking tests and going to school and doing the associated work, which is not necessarily the same thing as "smartest" or even "understands the material"

Brain Dead I think was the name? It was a weird comedy-politics-horror mix that was.. very memorable

Diabetes is about staying in balance, sugar makes blood sugar go up, insulin makes it go down. (So many more things than that but that's the basic mechanics). And low blood sugar can kill fast (minutes) while high is much slower (hours/days).

For those who aren't in the know, the safe bet is almost always, like, 99% of the time, sugar, even if you don't know what's wrong. A little sugar isn't gonna make a difference if you're high blood sugar/DKA'd, but it absolutely will save your life if you're low. And the opposite applies too.

The number of hypoglycemic death stares I have given people when they ask 'but isn't sugar bad for your diabetes?" ***MAYBE BUT NOT RIGHT NOW***

I don't love what it's doing to copyright law because as a bystander who's been affected by a bit of it.. I don't really see the copyright system getting better after adding a whole additional complication like this. There's positives to the tech, sure, but man are there a lot of downsides...

Yeah I guess to me it's a wide range of opinions, many of them negative. It's good at some things, some of which are worrying both from a moral but also legal perspective, it's bad at others, which is worrying because many promoters of it encourage these, leading to worse experiences.

This is why I left the caveat of "unless there's a very good reason". I can think of a few, but also, in general, planning for this kind of thing should have kept it from ever happening.

yeah, a lot of that use is location-specific. Here in Ohio we don't generally get a lot of tsunamis...

I came here to post exactly this. Even an every-few-seconds ding would be better than the EAS alarm noise for an amber alert 5 hours away from me in the middle of the night
