In the short term, the best way to halt authoritarian creep from the Trump administration is for Dems to get 51 votes in the Senate, which has to involve Collins' seat, and it's possible. But reactionary pundits and Obama 2012 consultants are telling all potential candidates that it's hopeless.
Candidate ideology matters, national conditions matter, and views of the national parties matter in congressional/senate races. A real-world consequence of reactionary pundits likely over-claiming about the effect of candidates is that we can't get a good challenger to run against Susan Collins.

Wasn’t that long ago states gave big subsidies to lure billion dollar data centers with few jobs and big electricity budgets. Now? I suspect pols are going to get voters coming out of the woodwork asking why they are subsidizing billion-dollar corps who are driving up their bills to make AI videos.
Trump’s nixing of hundreds of billions in electricity subsidies enacted by Biden won’t make things cheaper. Burning more fossil gas isn’t easy because there is a big backlog on turbines. Nuclear takes forever in US. So that leaves solar, wind, and restarting older (dirtier?) plants & grid upgrades.
Higher electricity prices follow directly into all kinds of things, including manufacturing costs, food, and daily living expenses. They hit middle-class and poor voters much harder.
