This is wonderful. We need more of this, especially in health care, actually. Navigating health care as an LGBTQ+ person can be difficult, even with people who want to be "affirming" but really don't know much about us or our needs.

Work is making me trial some AI stuff and I just rage mash the escape button constantly telling it to STFU. I asked it how to turn its own suggestions off and it didn't know. I looked it up and did it and I'm still getting them. WTF. Me at work: "Stop. Stop. Shut up. Stop. STAAAHHP."
And then just add to this the constant pressure to be on top of random Slack messages throughout the day. People asking me for a code review with urgency because a QA person got bored, ran out of work and bugged the scrum master. Nobody in dev ever leaves me the fuck alone anymore, not even my IDE
Sometimes I really miss just the days of opening like, SublimeText. Yeah, it didn't do my type hinting for me. It also didn't turn entire 200-line files into a blood red murder scene of squiggles on every other edit and puke up AI slop suggestions at me at every turn. The slop gets my ADHD bad.
I can't count on both hands how many times I swear at VS Code and mutter "I'm gonna @#%@# somebody" because of the visual and stimulatory overwhelm it gives me. Even my AuDHD friend has no idea what I'm talking about? Am I really that alone in this?
One thing I never see anybody at all give any attention to or talk about or acknowledge is how frustratingly overstimulating modern code editor setups are now? Everything's a mess of squiggles if you remove one line for a sec, AI suggestions are like a maddening toddler trying to "help" and so on.
Oh man, I almost threw up in my mouth! It's wild how people will do anything but learn web accessibility. I did briefly consider if AI autocompletes in VS Code could help me when I had painful tendonitis last fall, but honestly, not really. I have to use one at work now and it's annoying.
Maybe teachers also need a run-down on how to not inadvertently (or, advertently, if that's even a word) bully or exacerbate bullying in their classrooms. But I think a lot of them who do it know and don't care. They also excuse each other's bad behavior or overlook it.
I've talked to a lot of other survivors online. Most of them do in fact have similar stories. What makes some kids unlikeable to other kids often also makes them unlikeable or at least annoying to adults, and not all adults, teachers included, are mature enough to handle that appropriately.
But that being the constant reply erases the very real problem of teachers who are actually, actively part of the problem, which happens more than you know. Adults don't like emotionally dysregulated kids, full-top. And many are very nasty about it. Most ADHD and Autistic people know this.
You can't tell me "but, teachers can't do anything" because I've got an armload of anecdotes about my teachers having literally JOINED in on the bullying, even. Is that argument meant to make me just drop it? I suppose because the public blames teachers first for everything in school?
People honestly can't really talk to me about school bullying because their usual talking points and little sayings don't hold up against my lived experiences, which didn't look like bullying in the movies.
Though, I certainly had used enough of those services in my schools as a kid that you think the money would've been better spent on them doing a better job the first few times I had to see a school social worker or counselor. One of them mostly just played Uno with me once a week.
Of course, it's a whole lot cheaper to implement zero tolerance policies and put up some posters or send teachers to an afternoon training session than it is to provide kids with mental health services.
So, is abuse really abuse if they can't be fully responsible for their actions? Since they're also children.
And again, see how the focus on punitive justice applies here, because we're unable to recognize abuse as abuse when we are talking about abusers who can't be fully legally culpable for perpetrating their abuse. Like, you're not gonna sue or jail children for bullying (unless it's extreme).
Maybe if we talked about what schools can do for bullying victims in terms of support and healing, then we'd have to have a frank and open discussion about the fact that bullying is in fact a form of child abuse.
You really see how our society pushes and values punitive justice in the way people talk about how to handle school bullying. It is 100% centered on ideas about enforcement (of anti-bullying rules) and punishment for bullies. Never, how do we support the victims? Microcosm, meet macrocosm.
The fact I'm even able to rant about this in clear language is actually so much progress for me personally that it isn't even funny. Omfg.

Once again I am demanding to know, why the hell does every eCommerce site now use a MARQUEE at the top? Only American Eagle's allows you to pause it, and their pause button is currently broken anytime you try to set a filter or click onto a product. I hate, hate, HATE these.
Dafuq are all these online retailers using fucking marquees now!!! I can't read anything on a website when stuff is just... constantly moving. It fails WCAG 2.x criteria 2.2.2. The only one that didn't was AE's, but their pause button keeps resetting with every filter change.
It's honestly just a very alienating experience for me right now. I have a lot more understanding for other people who have felt excluded in this way. In many other areas of life, I can limit myself to more welcoming spaces or talk to more similar people. I hate this.
Chin hairs? Have had 'em. First one at 19. Hair loss? Been losing my temples since 21. Apple shape? Whole life, whenever I'm not very skinny. Anxiety and depression? Since the early 90s in childhood. Itchy ears? I've had eustachian tube dysfunction since HS. Poor sleep? Lmao.
Worst thing is that most symptoms of peri are things that I've had for many years, if not my whole life. So, I don't trust that I'll ever really "know" until I've been suffering for too long. I just can't untangle anything. I only don't have hot flashes.
Personally, I barely had a flat tummy for all about two seconds of my life. I'm a natural apple shape, the thing they're freaking out about becoming. A lot of BS go on in these conversations that I hate.
Where there is less forced or toxic positivity, or just legit happiness that's kinda assumed everybody feels, the things I see vented about are like, not having a flat tummy for the first time ever, or having anxiety for the first time. And the atrophy conversation. Oh lawd.
And so many declarations about being happy to age or fine with it or telling other women to accept aging gracefully. Y'all have not had any "lost years" or spent decades in and out of therapy just to get your life back and find it snatched away from you again by age, suddenly. It's so depressing.
So many conversations about sexual health among these women are focused around men. Whether their husbands will leave them or feel hurt when their libido drops, how much happier they are without their libido so they don't have to deal with men. Shit, one even said, "I'd make a good lesbian, now!"
I identify as a woman and would hate having a more masc appearance, I like feeling pretty, but the idea of being identified as a *mother* or potential one or whatever makes me want to leave my skin immediately for another plane completely and just never return.
And TBH the fact that so much of specifically women's health is focused mainly on reproduction is something that's always made me feel greatly, greatly uncomfortable in a way that I can only think to describe as a type of dysphoria, in spite of being a ciswoman.
I don't expect the world to revolve around me, but it really is alienating when I see so much conversation where people make big, blanket statements about their experience as if that's everyone's experience, for example.
I guess we're still too much in the early stages of destigmatization and opening up dialog with each other, but where I'm finding conversation, I'm finding very, very little that doesn't center cishet, non-disabled women who have been married and have kids.
Trying to navigate going into perimenopause and finding support as an ace-spectrum queer person with disabilities is just really not a fun time and making me feel mostly worse, not better, about having to get through all of this in the upcoming years.
That's really the thing, isn't it? No health advice or online support groups for things like perimenopause seem to be a place where I feel welcome, and not weird or broken, and that I'll be even a little understood.
Being young and queer and alt just like, you can avoid a lot of contact with that mainstream world of straight people and families. But coming over into health, into aging, into doctor appointments, nothing is for you, you feel like an outsider. You're not a consideration.
And every video of content about what to do for your health after 40 is some straight lady telling me that she's a mother of two, that she's a dedicated wife, all of these things. "You've probably spent your years... blah blah blah," and I'm like, I used to always be able to avoid you people.
But in these very heavily straight woman spaces, I feel like I don't exist or that I'm some kind of bizarre anomaly. It's kind of an extension of how doctors treat me. They also make these big, generalizing statements in full confidence that just don't apply to someone like me.
The fact is that my recovery has taken so many years, I just want to be able to enjoy feeling at least kinda young for even a year or two. There's so much people take for granted, or that they assume you've been able to enjoy already and should just move on from.
I almost feel like I have to be so morally perfect and exist in a society where looks don't matter if I want to truly be "good enough" as a progressive lesbian. But I also have trauma and many "lost" years, and am feeling very isolated. Aging in those circumstances is just harder and very lonely.
And I think since queer spaces tend to be more progressive, but also since progressive spaces still tend to be quite liberal, I don't really find any support for things like weight management or skincare in those communities. I find more calls to radical acceptance, body positivity, etc.
The experience of aging as a queer woman really sucks. I mean, it sucks for everyone, but as I'm trying to get on top of my health and self-educate... everything is for and by straight, white, able-bodied women with kids! Argh.
I don't think that it would have to be anything super detailed and involved, but a general education about subcultures to providers would be cool. I think if I were in psychology, I'd try to prepare some kind of guide and share it online.
Or, my therapist has commented before that something I said sounded very harsh, but my subculture (metalhead) is very big on things like intensity and dark humor. At the same time, many people have noticed that we're also actually cuddly.
But this would make those populations much more vulnerable, because if, say, abuse takes place within that topic area, they will feel as though they cannot reach out or discuss it without misunderstanding or mistreatment.
Or you may have a patient who is very well-grounded and educated but appears to have interests or beliefs that many would deem "crazy" and strange. Do you meet that person and immediately think they're delusional? They probably hold back out of fear. There is a history of bad things happening.
Subcultural sensitivity could help with preventing some misunderstandings, where the subculture has informed the patient's outlook on life very differently than expected. Or like, I score very low on the Autism masking scale, but I'm a metalhead. How does that impact the validity for me?
I never hear or see anybody talk about this, but I'm interested in the idea of cultural sensitivity for subcultures. Especially in the area of psychology. Subculture is considered "chosen," but many of us ended up in one in adolescence, and it's become an integral part of who we are.
The idea that HTML is "easy" and not important to think about, or look at and leave feedback on in code reviews, is part of what's keeping the web from being more accessible. As the Internet's user base ages, however, I think more will care. Most people have to be personally affected to care.
