Thrilled for him. Also, it's extremely embarrassing that we're still in "First Black person to ever..." territory in the big year 2025. Please. We know it's not because they're not excellent.

All Iām saying is that it really does say a lot that trump ordered flags half mast for this person but commanded flags be at full mast for his inauguration while they were still meant to be at half for president jimmy carter, a genuinely good man.
Taylor van Doren, PhD (@taylorvandoren.bsky.social)
I have to admit, Iām confused why flags are half mast right now. He wasnāt a politician, public servant, or particularly impressive person. He was a mediocre white guy with bad opinions and spoke really loud about them. Never ādebatedā in good faith, was openly racist and misogynistic.
Taylor van Doren, PhD (@taylorvandoren.bsky.social)
It's so important to learn that not all opinions are valid. If someone says that Black people were better off enslaved or under Jim Crow law, that is a shitty opinion and you deserve to be called out and absolutely no one is required to respect that shitty opinion.

I kind of want to do Death Without Weeping but idk if that would be too long/intense for an undergraduate class? I feel like I read 10 ethnographies per semester (among all my classes) as an upper level undergrad, but that doesn't seem to be the case now.

So I get to teach Qualitative Research Methods next semester! I'd really like my students to read 1 classic ethnography and 1 contemporary ethnography. I have my contemporary pick. I'd be interested to hear from #anthropology #academicsky about their fave classic ethnography for undergrads

My maybe unpopular take about the critique of R. F. Kuang being heavy-handed and not trusting her readers to "get it" is that the vast majority of the audience reading her books wouldn't "get it" without her explaining it to them and the ideas she explores are too important not to get
