I'm so confused, so that ignorant assessment probably isn't far off. I think any prisoner should be able to get any medical care or treatment they need. But I think the state should at the very least be reimbursed eventually for that treatment or their insurance pays. This goes for every prisoner.

And yes that's what I'm saying. The state is in so much debt as it is, is it that unreasonable to ask people to help pay back for medical expenses that aren't a direct cause of the state? Or have their insurance pay for it if they have it?
thagoochiestmane.bsky.social (@thagoochiestmane.bsky.social) reply parent
I actually do think prisoners should get access to education or paying jobs that are comporable to non-prison wages. Seems vital for rehabilitating people back into society. Just because I'm cheap, and I want the state to also be cheap, it doesn't mean I'm a hugely evil person on social issues.
thagoochiestmane.bsky.social (@thagoochiestmane.bsky.social) reply parent
See that's a good consideration: if a prisoner is uninsured, that actually seems like a time when it would make sense for the state to pay. But I still don't think it's unreasonable for the state to seek at least partial reimbursement for medical costs from the prisoner at some point in the future.
thagoochiestmane.bsky.social (@thagoochiestmane.bsky.social) reply parent
What are you talking about? I'm not trying to gatekeep any procedures? Or by gatekeep do you mean just not making the state pay for it? Because I don't think the state should be paying for any prisoner's medical care, unless it was caused by the state (or an officer of it). Or we get universal.
thagoochiestmane.bsky.social (@thagoochiestmane.bsky.social) reply parent
That's not even remotely what I said. If someone commits a crime and is imprisoned, why shouldn't they or their insurance pay for their GAC? Isn't that what would have happened if they weren't imprisoned? And I also think trans inmates shouldn't be housed with a gender they don't identify as.
thagoochiestmane.bsky.social (@thagoochiestmane.bsky.social) reply parent
And I'd love for the system to not rip off the government, but that will take a lot more unified political action by the population. But why does it seem like it's so incomprehensible for prisoners to reimburse the state for their GAC? I'm not even saying they can't get it like Newsom.
thagoochiestmane.bsky.social (@thagoochiestmane.bsky.social) reply parent
It's actually good to be worried about taxes; fiscal responsibility is necessary for a nation. The furthest left on the political spectrum advocate for confiscating the money from billionaires, even though all that money couldn't fund the US government for one full year, while emptying that "well."
thagoochiestmane.bsky.social (@thagoochiestmane.bsky.social) reply parent
Maybe that's the way it works in other countries, but I don't know if that's ever been the case in America. But I'm not sure how free GAC would "reduce the likelihood they commit crimes again." It's not like trans people would be committing crimes just because they haven't received GAC yet.
thagoochiestmane.bsky.social (@thagoochiestmane.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm opposed to taxpayers footing the bill for GAC for criminals, without being reimbursed by the criminal or their insurance upon release. Especially so if the medical care comes from the government and the government is getting ripped off by the medical providers. (Obligatory "War Dogs" gif)
thagoochiestmane.bsky.social (@thagoochiestmane.bsky.social) reply parent
Doesn't hormone therapy count as GAC? And I'm not opposed to GAC in general. I'm opposed to the state/taxpayers footing the bill for the care without any reimbursement upon release.
thagoochiestmane.bsky.social (@thagoochiestmane.bsky.social) reply parent
I believe the statistics on SA towards them, but are they really murdered more than "PDF files"? I've always heard those people are target #1 in prisons. And that does make sense, but would GAC even guarantee they would be transferred to a prison that aligns with their gender?
thagoochiestmane.bsky.social (@thagoochiestmane.bsky.social) reply parent
If by humane conditions you mean the types of conditions that would impact all of the prisoners there? No, prisoners should be kept in humane conditions. But if by humane conditions you mean tax-payers footing the bill for their GAC, then I don't support that unless they reimburse the expense.
thagoochiestmane.bsky.social (@thagoochiestmane.bsky.social) reply parent
And do people not realize how much debate there is about rules in sports for non-trans issues? NFL fans have disagreements over the rules, norms, and what should be allowed/banned all the time. To think that the trans sports issue would somehow have universal agreement is silly and unrealistic.
thagoochiestmane.bsky.social (@thagoochiestmane.bsky.social) reply parent
That’s why I’m opposed to his stance on GAC for kids. But his prisoner stance seems reasonable. Why should taxpayers be on the hook for something that their private insurance should have been? Especially so when they've committed a crime and the experience is supposed to be a punishment.
