I've seen those! Is it weird to call a plant adorable?

My nectar feeder is just outside my home office window; when the hummingbirds leave it, they climb rapidly up out of my sight so I don't know where they go. Yesterday I was sitting out back and noticed that they frequently perch at the very tip top of our spruce for a wee rest! #birds #Bobsbackyard

Here's a 2nd post of the day, of a Common Loon family at our camp in northern Ontario - dedicated to @aba.org and @birdizlife.bsky.social for their support of my book and providing me an opportunity to write a feature article on birding for wellness. The Common Loon is their bird of the year

I'm humbled and proud to present the feature article that I wrote for @aba.org's Sept issue of Birding mag, in which I describe the joy that birding has given me as a form of wellness in coping with a chronic disease and chronic pain. Many thanks to ABA and in particular to @birdizlife.bsky.social

You might have noticed that I used a hashtag #Bobsbackyard. I am just finalizing a coffee table type book of all my backyard birds and about to seek a publisher. Everything from scarlet tanagers, rusty blackbird, evening grosbeaks, redpolls, wild turkeys, Lincoln's sparrow and many more. Very birdy!

Funny you say that - I've had many a day when I was out hiking local conservation area trails, and not seen much. Return home and my backyard is just hopping!

Where abouts are you located? Most likely it is a migrant passing through, which is probably what triggered it as rare.
Bob Bell 🇨🇦 (@thebirderbob.bsky.social)
Fall migration is on, and some warblers have made their way from their boreal forest breeding grounds in northern Ontario and kindly stopped over here in Ancaster before they continue on further south - like this Cape May Warbler #birds #birding #warblers #Ancaster #HamOnt

No, not really - they seem to be obligate migrants (hard-wired). Their median departure date from my area at the west end of Lake Ontario in southern Ontario is September 8th.
Bob Bell 🇨🇦 (@thebirderbob.bsky.social) reply parent
I know, right? It's so easy to know the exact date they arrive in the spring, but much harder to know when they left - I find the numbers slowly dwindle until there is only one, and then, one morning, none. Refilling the jelly these days is hazardous - have to fight through a horde of wasps!

It's heartbreaking to think that the Baltimore Orioles will be departing in about two weeks, and won't be back until early May. These flying jewels have had another very successful breeding season, with up to about 10 different individuals visiting my feeders #birds #birding #orioles

Thank you! I appreciate you saying that. I enjoyed it too! I might run another round of warblers in a few weeks - there are 16 more species that I've seen and photographed this year in Ontario. And then maybe sparrows!

There's been a lot of Blue Jays shenanigans in my backyard lately - 5 or 6 youngsters coming to the feeders, but then begging to be fed when they are more than capable themselves.
