Good. What needs split is the search engine vs. the advertising business. The browser is just a tool, and if it were officially in the hands of the advertising side people would be fleeing it in droves without any other help needed.

What's the current thinking re: an organization's liability when threatened by a state for violation of that state's law when the organization isn't located in that state, has no offices in that state, and doesn't specifically target users from that state, just doesn't block them?

I really wish we had a law on the books saying "The minimum settlement in a class-action suit shall be the average or estimated damages due each plaintiff, times the number of members of the class, plus all costs and fees. Any settlement amount less than this minimum shall be rejected.".

I run into ICE, I've no problem making them jump through every hoop there is. And if they balk? SPD's already issued warnings that armed criminals are attempting assaults while impersonating ICE officers, so the call to 911 will be for "armed criminals threatening passengers".

Thing is, by their ToS you can't buy any romance or military-themed fiction using PP. Which is far from what anyone would consider NSFW or "adult". And under laws being considered, *anything* mentioning LGBTQIA+ characters, no matter how bland, would violate their ToS too. That's a bit much.

"dubcon"? That's a huge portion of romance novels, anything where the heroine doesn't want to go with the dashing hero, doesn't like him, but eventually after he forces her to go with him she comes around.

Now everybody else gets burned because the MBAs were short-sighted. I wonder how you'd calculate damages in a breach-of-contract suit for "I could have participated in this class action settlement IF you'd've registered the copyright like you were obligated to, but you didn't so I can't.".
Todd Knarr (@tknarr.bsky.social)
I'm not really surprised. It seems common for companies to not go to the trouble of registering copyright until they need to to take legal action, depending on the law granting automatic copyright for most purposes. Typical MBA-think, placing "saving" money above all else.
Todd Knarr (@tknarr.bsky.social)
This. YoshiP clearly doesn't want to kill mods if he can help it, but the law, economics and respect for other players demand action when the effects of a mod exceed certain limits. DON'T PUSH THOSE LIMITS.
