I think it's definitely become more visible, but I'm less certain it's widespread. I honestly think a tougher line on "look, if you don't think Rishi Sunak is English, then you don't get booked on Question Time" could help reassert.

It is a shame that those people are in charge of the Conservative party
Tom Roberts (@tpgroberts.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm not wholly convinced they've meaningfully broken down in society at large so much as for a small group of right-wing elites, who in turn influence a small group of right-wing nutters. Small shifts in enforcing these red lines at the BBC would, hopefully, do wonders.

Of course, Ellis is himself a monster.
Tom Roberts (@tpgroberts.bsky.social) reply parent
Warren Ellis did a Bond miniseries in the 2010s that is probably the closest to a truly sociopathic Bond since Fleming's books, and it's interesting and compelling in the micro, but taking a step back I just don't think it's a sustainable take for the franchise.

I think the Moore movies, and particularly Moore's performance (later, especially) are just self aware enough to recognise their absurdity, and then get flummoxed with what to do with it. I think the Craig movies can't quite decide if they're deconstructions or reconstructions

Tom Roberts (@tpgroberts.bsky.social) reply parent
I think there's a fairly good argument to be made that every Craig Bond movie is a reaction to wider industry trend at that moment, and it makes the era as a whole badly incoherent.

I know we may all like to blame Twitter but I do think the success of Trump amidst one of the most openly racist campaigns of our lifetimes, coupled with the Tories own flailing is the key driver. Like, go back ten years and tell them about the Rwanda plan and see how many bite.

Same with Farage, I think there's always been a nastiness hiding beneath the bonhomie (see the immigrants moving in next door remark) but I do think he's genuinely moved to get to "mass deportations."
Tom Roberts (@tpgroberts.bsky.social) reply parent
Honestly, I don't think you can look at Carswell's relationship to UKIP and his commentary from the time and not go "he's massively drifted right since then." Yeah, the views are maybe based on pre-existing prejudice but he was just not THIS driven by it.

I think it is part of her internal narrative of her *very impressive* career that everything has to reinforce her wider political views which is that the UK educational system is too soft, and so she was failed by it.
Tom Roberts (@tpgroberts.bsky.social) reply parent
Kemi's personal narrative is that her Nigerian school pushed her hard, and the UK didn't, which is the real reason she only got 2 Bs and a D at A-Level, which would honestly be quite sad were she not trying to use it to justify a quite bonkers politics.

If this is what she's doing, then Phillipson needs to be briefed on that! If you listen to her responses here it's pretty clear she thinks it's being renegotiated and reformed, not just amending guidance.
Tom Roberts (@tpgroberts.bsky.social) reply parent
It's also another instance of the right, by virtue of having a clear ideological project, driving the government agenda. Kemi wants to extend ILR to 10 years? Policy within 4 months. Nigel wants to leave the ECHR, well we're now going to reform it. The massive majority left flailing.
Tom Roberts (@tpgroberts.bsky.social)
This is, frankly, embarrassing and a very clear articulation of where Labour's cowardice has taken it. As Phillips gets at, Starmer has defended the ECHR previously, he's rightly dismissed reform as unserious, but Phillipson is now forced into pretending this doesn't contradict Cooper trying to.

Yeah, I don't think these are mutually exclusive? But I think particularly the last year and a half it was very clear they'd lost any sense that they'd be dealing with the consequences of this. Sunak's tax cuts are the ideological choice, the fiddling to pay for them is the absence of care.
