Yes, this is not helpful, but listening back to the Today Programme segment (yesterday shortly after 7.30am), it was lazy editorial decision making, because the interviewer simply puts Farage's 'taxi service' comment to the RNLI as if this is something that deserves to be dignified with a response.
Framing is everything - they had a statement from the RNLI, but why not get a representative from HM Coastguard, or another maritime agency? There should be a chorus of voices condemning Farage for this comment.
The first and most important editorial decisions are 'do we cover this?' and 'how do we cover this?'. As a former BBC journalist myself, I think it's slightly lazy to leave the RNLI spokesman as its own sole defender, and creates immediate imbalance.
