I've seen markdowns on American fruit that seemed almost incredible to me for weeks on end at various grocery stores. Some people were obviously buying it, but in the past those shelves would have been bare.
UsuallyquietinCanada (@usuallyquietin.bsky.social) reply parent
Let the American produce for on the shelves. The grocery stores will stop buying it and source elsewhere.
UsuallyquietinCanada (@usuallyquietin.bsky.social) reply parent
As far as I know only Alberta and Saskatchewan are currently selling made in the USA liquors, beers and wines. The other provinces aren't buying any. Several "American" beers/brands are licensed for production in Canada, such as Coors light. Those are still being sold.
UsuallyquietinCanada (@usuallyquietin.bsky.social) reply parent
We should use it wisely. Buy Canadian whenever possible. Choose products that are available from other international trading partners. Make it so selling American products is not the best for the seller's profit margin. Collectively Canadians can change corporate buying policy.
UsuallyquietinCanada (@usuallyquietin.bsky.social) reply parent
We are the biggest consumer of US goods, our economies are integrated through a "free" trade agreement. Products covered through this agreement are not subject to US tariffs ATM. Capitalism means that companies will sell whatever generates them profit. We have the freedom of choice.
UsuallyquietinCanada (@usuallyquietin.bsky.social) reply parent
If there's still demand... Stores will still sell products that generate profits. Also, ๐จ๐ฆ is not self sufficient. We should work towards greater autonomy in our agricultural sector, but we are likely never going to produce orange juice. We could source that from Brazil, but it's more $$$ to do that.
UsuallyquietinCanada (@usuallyquietin.bsky.social) reply parent
If we don't buy it the grocery chains won't source it and then our government doesn't have to take the blame for imposing reciprocal or counter-tarriffs, but the end result is that we don't support the US economy that Trump is using to try to harm ๐จ๐ฆ sovereignty.
