Sorry, I did not mean that's the case in all US cities. There are absolutely areas where high speed rail makes perfect sense. Even then, vast low density suburbs may be an issue if new right of way is needed to connect the dense city centers.

Trump never stopped campaigning after losing in 2020. By the next Republican primaries there was no real competition. Newsom may be trying to achieve the same thing. A good candidate appearing soon could also somewhat shift people's primary focus from hating Democrats.

The problem is usually the inability to build anything. I do agree that in many cases politicians try to "fix" this inability with some mega project only to fail even more spectacularly. That being said, some large projects are very much needed and can't be replaced with just modest improvements.
