Part of me wonders how far the lunatics in Florida can take things before there is some kind of major backlash. Florida has become more right-wing in recent years, but it still polls like a purple state on individual issues. Meanwhile, they are mashing the accelerator like its Oklahoma.

100% Specifically, the rumor should be that he was being poisoned under the auspices of treatment for a chronic condition. Wrap it into a conspiracy about Peter Theil and the Silicon Valley bros trying to take over, and we could wrap up a lot of bad people in it.

I think one of the problems is that media has conditioned people to believe that fascism comes along with dark skies and ominous music. People don’t recognize authoritarianism when they see their neighbors walking the dog on a sunny day with chirping birds.

The only thing going on right now that could legitimately be classified as a diversion is the Cracker Barrel logo thing. The key distinction is that unlike the attempted Fed firing and cities getting invaded, the only people who actually care about the Cracker Barrel logo are freaks.

I think this is where things went sideways. Fox News started calling other outlets the "liberal media" in an attempt to "both sides" their blatant bias. At some point, liberal journalists started believing the lie because the truth looks biased when compared to blatant propaganda.

You mean you aren't going to post "1700% increase in early voting compared to this time in 2017. Blue biblical flood incoming!"?
Verat Chao (@veratchao.bsky.social) reply parent
Maybe that's part of the problem too. Schumer's vibe IS guy who consults made up Republican family in his head for decision making. There are some who just aren't built for this moment, period. I agree, the rest need to lean into their stengths.

the fact of the matter is that a lot of violent crime is the purview of a small number of individuals in specific, geographically bounded communities. the only way to get those people off the streets is with the trust of the community itself.

The only bright spot in the current economy is a nascent industry that requires billions of dollars of capital investment and has shown no sign of turning a profit. I think that is the thing that eventually snaps.

There will be a point system, so that will work. A progress pride flag bumper sticker will have a similar point value to a Coexist bumper sticker so you could go that route. You can also sub out a regular pride flag bumper sticker and either a small NATO or UN symbol.

It's the information environment. Pete Hegseth, an important cabinet head appointed by the president, supports a pastor who thinks women shouldn't vote. However, the media or the modern gaggle of podcasters will never report it as "the GOP is against women voting."
Verat Chao (@veratchao.bsky.social) reply parent
This is the most depressing and hopeful statistic simultaneously. It's depressing because those numbers should have never been that high. It's hopeful because it shows we don't have to change that many minds to end up with a commanding majority.

That's the best explanation for Trump. POS's envy what he's able to get by with. They see him, another POS, get by with things and wish they could do the same. That's why it's really telling who is starting to be skeptical of him because of the Epstein thing and who is standing by his side.
Verat Chao (@veratchao.bsky.social) reply parent
Republicans like Tapper never cared about the troops. "The troops" are worshipped by the right because they are right-coded. They don't actually care about them as people. It's all virtue signaling. If thousands of troops marched in the streets against Trump, Cons would dump them in a second.

Stagflation was an epochal crisis for liberalism and it's one of the reasons I lean so hard into the small-a abundance thing: rapid economic growth was what underwrote America's first tentative steps in the direction of social democracy, and the left's turn toward growth skepticism was bad!
