Gosh, I hope you were heavily armed.
Don Mitchell (@wailuku.bsky.social) reply parent
I just uploaded Saddle Road Press' 66th book (since 2011) to the printer/distributor. Getting traction for our books (and authors) is very hard when the advertising budget is zero.

Longer than an essay, but John McPhee's "Draft No. 4: On the Writing Process" is excellent. Oops, I'm not a comp/reht prof...just a retired anthropologist (and writer).

Get a javascript killer for your browser and you can sometimes read Hax (sometimes only the Q shows up, sometimes the whole thing).

I sorry the guy got killed, but really -- "unprovoked?" He was setting up to kill the buffalo.

Before you know it, it'll be 9 years and 1 month. Rock on!
Don Mitchell (@wailuku.bsky.social) reply parent
LMK when you go. I don't live on the Big Island anymore, but I grew up there and lived there recently. I can suggest some amazing places to go for photography.
Don Mitchell (@wailuku.bsky.social) reply parent
Those are pictures of Bove, no?

And of course they're trying to shut down the Mauna Loa Observatory.
Don Mitchell (@wailuku.bsky.social) reply parent
Also pumped storage, but that's probably way, way too technical for the Orange Dildo.

Consider foot racing...it's had a long run (as it were).

Surely the dreaded 5G should make an appearance in a post like that.

You left out Hawai'i!

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Night-b... The "once a year" part is incorrect. If you read the Wikipedia entry, you'll see Epiphyllum osypetalum in the list. Also in Hawai'i (my home) "Queen of the Night" refers to Cestrum nocturum, a jasmine.
Don Mitchell (@wailuku.bsky.social) reply parent
At one point several years ago, Kilauea Volcano was pumping out noxious fumes ("vog") and a few of the usual idiots were suggesting a dome be built over the crater. Keep that vog inside!

So where's the DT SAT scores leak? This would have been in the old days where 1,600 was perfect. I'd guess 1,000 combined for him.

When (for some reason) I have lots of ice cream in the freezer I flip back 39 years to my drinking days and when I finish a bowl, why I just mosey back to the freezer and get another one...and another one...and it surely does bring back memories of going back for just another beer.

Taphonomy was one of my favorite things to lecture about in intro prehistory. It's a very, very cool discipline.

You beat me to it. No way they're going to man up and take responsibility for anything. What a bunch of assholes.
Don Mitchell (@wailuku.bsky.social) reply parent

Don Mitchell (@wailuku.bsky.social) reply parent
No, he also knows how to be an evil asshole. He's most excellent at that.
Don Mitchell (@wailuku.bsky.social) reply parent
Now that's seriously funny.
Don Mitchell (@wailuku.bsky.social) reply parent
So it seems clear that the AI hand-image-rendering processes learned from this. Right?
Don Mitchell (@wailuku.bsky.social) reply parent
Let me see if I have this right. I'm to believe in something that seems (I suppose) real to you, except that people personally involved in it don't think it's real. If that's not "investigate" I don't know what is. You must believe that B&B bullshit.
Don Mitchell (@wailuku.bsky.social) reply parent
WTF is wrong with you? I posted about how the actual psychiatrist who worked with Betty and Barney was convinced that their report was untrue. How the fuck you got from that to "doesn't believe in anything but human beings" is a mystery to me. Stupidly offensive.
Don Mitchell (@wailuku.bsky.social) reply parent
I knew the psychiatrist (Ben Simon) who worked with Betty and Barney, and he told me he never for a moment thought that what they reported had actually happened.
Don Mitchell (@wailuku.bsky.social) reply parent
Could be both, you know. Actually, pretty sure that's the case.

Am I the only guy here who's actually had cystoscopy? It wasn't all that bad. Not nearly as much fun as prostate biopsy, which involved a big thingie slipped up my butt and (without anesthetic) twelve needles shot in my prostate. "Do you want to hold my hand?" the nurse said, and you bet I did.
Don Mitchell (@wailuku.bsky.social) reply parent
Ah, but where is he holding them? That makes a difference.
Don Mitchell (@wailuku.bsky.social) reply parent
Not to mention what they're doing to ground-based optical astronomy.
Don Mitchell (@wailuku.bsky.social) reply parent
Way way back in the day, before cable TV, I would never watch ABC because I saw them as clearly right-leaning. Maybe (I'd say now) close to being the Fox of their time. So none of this surprises me.
Don Mitchell (@wailuku.bsky.social) reply parent
Probably unnecessary advice but make sure you have a complete exact copy, every page, before you and it in. Scanning with a time-date stamp would be cool. My experience in a state college system is to never assume the admin won't do some kind of bad shit.

Well, the church-and-state thing means the state can't tell the churches to do anything. Right? Isn't that what it means? Oh, right. Churches are into that one-way thing, where they get to call the shots. I keep forgetting.

I note that one grammatical/stylistic blunder he doesn't often make is the good ole apostrophe error (iPhone's). If he'd make more of them, then his rants would seem more appropriate to the fucking demented ignorant moron he is.

Here's what I learned as a land surveyor in the rainforest of Bougainville Island: If you know Greenwich Mean Time you can compute longitude by relating it to "Local Apparent Noon" as seen by your instrument; if you don't, you can't. I used to get GMT from radio station WWVH, as read by Jane Barbee.

It's not really AI, though -- just plain old Google Translate, which has been around like forever.
Don Mitchell (@wailuku.bsky.social) reply parent
I know poets who have had great fun by writing a poem that's more or less an ordinary poem in English, and then running it through multiple translate/retranslate sequences into other languages via Google Translate, ending up in English.

Being around other drinkers is an important test, and it sounds as though you've passed it. I'm 39 years sober and at first being around drinkers wasn't easy. But it stopped bothered me very quickly. Of course when they get drunk and stupid...but that's another issue.

Don Mitchell (@wailuku.bsky.social) reply parent
Absolutely. Or just large dragons, or noble dragons.... I'm so, so tired of seeing this dragon thing. It's complete nonsense put forth by pedants (and, hey, my mother was a high school English teacher).

Ah, but the people supporting this madness ARE braindead, which is why the lies work. Also -- adding to your post -- we need 3-5 years to make a kitchen from scratch and equip it.

I grew up in a small town on one of Hawai'i's outer islands and in the fifties when that song was popular I thought it was "like a big piece of pie" because there was no pizza anywhere, never heard of it. I don't even think Honolulu had pizza then.

When I moved to Ithaca from Hawai'i, I wasn't expecting volcanic eruptions to follow me but it seems one has. Maybe it will fill Cayuga Lake the way the 2018 Puna one filled Green Lake on the Big Island. We're safe up here, though.

Don Mitchell (@wailuku.bsky.social) reply parent
I have to say that the Patterson/Crichton pairing for the volcano novel "Eruption" yielded maybe one of the worst novels I've ever read. Yes, fiction, but every five or ten pages another absolute howler of an error about Hawai'i, Mauna Loa, etc. would appear. Just absolute garbage.
Don Mitchell (@wailuku.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm sure you realize how important that was. Good for you! (says a guy who's been sober for 39 years).
