I just uploaded Saddle Road Press' 66th book (since 2011) to the printer/distributor. Getting traction for our books (and authors) is very hard when the advertising budget is zero.
Longer than an essay, but John McPhee's "Draft No. 4: On the Writing Process" is excellent. Oops, I'm not a comp/reht prof...just a retired anthropologist (and writer).

I knew the psychiatrist (Ben Simon) who worked with Betty and Barney, and he told me he never for a moment thought that what they reported had actually happened.

I once wrote a well-known author praising the way she'd handled a particular issue in a story. She wrote back almost immediately, pleased to have heard from me. She said she almost never hears anything from her readers.

Here's what I learned as a land surveyor in the rainforest of Bougainville Island: If you know Greenwich Mean Time you can compute longitude by relating it to "Local Apparent Noon" as seen by your instrument; if you don't, you can't. I used to get GMT from radio station WWVH, as read by Jane Barbee.

Being around other drinkers is an important test, and it sounds as though you've passed it. I'm 39 years sober and at first being around drinkers wasn't easy. But it stopped bothered me very quickly. Of course when they get drunk and stupid...but that's another issue.

I grew up in a small town on one of Hawai'i's outer islands and in the fifties when that song was popular I thought it was "like a big piece of pie" because there was no pizza anywhere, never heard of it. I don't even think Honolulu had pizza then.

I have to say that the Patterson/Crichton pairing for the volcano novel "Eruption" yielded maybe one of the worst novels I've ever read. Yes, fiction, but every five or ten pages another absolute howler of an error about Hawai'i, Mauna Loa, etc. would appear. Just absolute garbage.
I'm sure you realize how important that was. Good for you! (says a guy who's been sober for 39 years).
