the thing that did it for me is going back to old forum threads and seeing the sheer number of deleted accounts and scrubbed posts and dead links and broken images. digital records are fascinating because you can make a perfect copy for ~free but you have to make a *really* deep copy to keep it

Star Trek is I think the cleanest example of this. modern Trek creators (with some exceptions) clearly have different priorities for the franchise than longtime fans. and it's reasonable for fans to be upset about that, but a lot of fans act like massive assholes over it

also in terms of straight partisan politics the bay area is *insanely* liberal. there was not a red *precinct* in San Jose in 2020 (don't know if this was true of 2024 too). the thing with the bay area is that a) a lot of people are NIMBYs and b) a small number of people are insane and powerful
