Husband, girl dad, numbers guy. Cities should be car-optional. Pro-bus, pro-bike, pro-immigrant, pro-housing. These smart, walkable, mixed-use skeets are mine alone, and will veer into economics, sports, and Nashville.

Phenomenal work all around. Thanks to these endearingly weird transit bros for clearly demonstrating a problem, and to the city for listening and making positive change. I’m encouraging everybody out there to try stuff like this where you live, and see if you can make it better!!!

I’ve never been more tired trying to beat a bus. I beat it out of principle but no one is actually going to do that. Riding the bus beats walking or driving downtown, pass it on.

Nashville had an incredible opportunity here to 1) do the right thing 2) embarrass Elon Musk, and 3) prove conservatives wrong by building the bus lanes called for in Connect Downtown. No further engagement needed, no outreach, no hand wringing. We did all that already. Build it.

Downtown Nashville’s best block for street trees and great sidewalks is also one of its worst for buildings that engage with pedestrians.

Here’s a route that would immediately generate meaningful ridership and be worth the state investment to double track the CSX rail. (Note: the WeGo Star is on that yellow line that goes straight East from downtown.)
Andy (@wildman.bsky.social) reply parent
Would love to see rail expansion but for now it looks like we’ll have to wait for Tennessee to test out toll lanes as the cure for traffic before the state looks at regional transit.
Andy (@wildman.bsky.social) reply parent
Positive train control is the big gap to expanding existing service: has been too expensive for the current low ridership. The Star is on a short line (Nashville & Eastern) and not on the major CSX lines that go out of the city - need the state to throw muscle at CSX to ever share that RoW :(
Andy (@wildman.bsky.social)
I will donate $100 to the political campaign of the councilmember’s choice to the first Nashville councilmember who can get precast concrete (parking bumpers, jersey barriers, etc) installed to protect >1/4 mile of bike lanes in their district. (Applies to NDOT or TDOT installation, no greenways)
Chris Bowe (@cbowe34.bsky.social) reposted reply parent
Very funny to me that transpo engineers keep specifying new versions of short, bolt down bike lane curbs of various shapes and sizes when they could simply source precast parking bumpers locally for the same cost. Who needs bespoke stuff from Europe? Let American car culture work for you!

This thread is a little stream-of-consciousness and doesn't have a great so-what, except maybe this: You'll find me advocating for change that helps fight rising cost of living; that helps keeps the neighborhood characters in their neighborhoods; that helps more than just existing property owners.
Andy (@wildman.bsky.social) reply parent
This neighbor lamented worsening traffic as a concern with all the new development. I checked the stats: daily traffic on our section of Gallatin Pike (that main road) is at a 30 year low! Memories are unreliable; many people don't like change. But a growing city is going to change, no matter what.
Andy (@wildman.bsky.social) reply parent
This neighbor went on about how the only good thing was that her friends had been moving from (more expensive) neighborhoods in Nashville to her area. Gentrification is pushing her social circle out of their neighborhoods into her neighborhood. I'd never thought about that dynamic.
Andy (@wildman.bsky.social)
I was chatting with a friend of a friend who's been in my neighborhood since the early 90s. House is 3 parcels off of Gallatin Pike, a >20k-cars-a-day road. She described nearly all change as negative, and said that a lot at the end of her block had her anxiety going crazy. I get it, change is hard!
Andy (@wildman.bsky.social) reply parent
Permitting more housing in expensive neighborhoods of Nashville will reduce gentrification pressures in SE Nashville. SE Nashville CMs who care about their district's cost of living should be supporting every possible upzoning in West Nashville.
