I actually wonder if it would make sense for the majority of corporations to just stay private these days. Why float at IPO? You're locked into your CEO role for possibly years, you're a slave to market conditions, investor insecurity;
And so gradually the product gets shitter and shitter until people shrug and go "why am i fucking paying for this?", bail out and download it all instead.
You'll still get ads on some of those despite paying for them. But as with anything, they have shareholders who demand larger growth, more dividends every year, so they're forced to cut seasons shorter, bid for worse movies, put ads in, introduce silver, gold tiers accounts etc
Not sure why this would be a surprise to anyone. People want home entertainment, obviously. But if you have Now TV, Netflix and Amazon - that could easily be £30-£40 a month. Add on Spotify and Apple or Disney and you're getting into silly territory.
