I'm sure it will. I have close ties to the US and was planning a visit in 2025 or 2026 but that won't happen while Trump et al are running the show. Plenty of places in Europe to visit and I've always wanted to travel to Canada...
Aralski (@aralski.bsky.social) reply parent
Maybe?

Beautiful. I visited in 1997. The place was practically empty. I had the tree-covered Ta Prohm temple all to myself. My retirement trip in a decade or so will be a good wander around SE Asia again.

I cut down on UPFs after reading Chris Van Tulleken's Ultra Processed People. To be fair I'm pretty fit and healthy (although 60 is approaching) and didn't eat too many but I noticed a change in energy levels, lost a bit of weight, and stopped falling asleep at 9 pm. Like a good heatwave though!

Not to mention Belfast, Brighton, Cardiff, Glasgow, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Newcastle... Oh and then there's Amsterdam, Barcelona, Berlin, Brussels, Copenhagen, Lisbon, Marseille, Oslo, Paris, Porto, Stockholm...
Aralski (@aralski.bsky.social) reply parent
An ocean away but yesterday was a holiday in the UK. I drove my daughter to her new apartment in north London, sunny, warm, people out in cafés, parks, everyone having a great time. Cities are wonderful.
Aralski (@aralski.bsky.social) reply parent
Puts one in mind of Michael Gove's "we hold all the cards" comment about the UK and EU Brexit negotiations. That went well.
Aralski (@aralski.bsky.social) reply parent
Indeed. Lewes v Whitehawk derby last year got close to 1800 in Isthmian Prem.
Aralski (@aralski.bsky.social) reply parent
Shadow cabinet required. Dems need to act with one voice. Newsom perhaps taking the lead, others like AOC, Pritzker, Waltz all singing from the same hymn sheet.
Aralski (@aralski.bsky.social) reply parent
Honestly. How is this clown, loser, the one who brings authoritarianism to the US. What on earth does this say about America that Trump et al are the ones who have been able to pull this off?
Aralski (@aralski.bsky.social) reply parent
The idea that this clown is the one bringing authoritarianism to the US is simply astonishing. He's an idiot who can hardly string a sentence together yet millions voted for him. What a damning indictment upon the country, its education system, and the low expectations of so many.
Aralski (@aralski.bsky.social) reply parent
The French are absolutely right about this.
Aralski (@aralski.bsky.social) reply parent
The tactics of Newsom could be replicated across the country with someone like AOC doing similar on the east coast. There need to be experts in defence, foreign relations, etc in place that can rebut the falsehoods continually spouted by the Trump government. A shadow government is what's needed.
Aralski (@aralski.bsky.social) reply parent
Despite living in the UK I have close connections with the US and listen to your podcast on a daily basis. As usual another interesting episode but what appears blindingly obvious to me and others here in the UK is the need for the Dems to coalesce around a single leader and to agree to do that now.

Philip Roth's 'The Plot Against America' also provides a useful and chilling insight.
Aralski (@aralski.bsky.social) reply parent
Well if the US is fighting for its life with foreign troops having taken a chunk of Florida and US cities and civilians being relentlessly attacked by drones one might see the logic but that ain't going to happen.

He's a laughingstock and too much of a dunce to see that just about everyone is playing him for all they can get. That so many Americans thought he was the answer to their problems is a terrible indictment of that country.
Aralski (@aralski.bsky.social) reply parent
Utter humiliation. Trump usually lashes out wildly when humiliated, that he doesn't with Putin just makes me more and more inclined to believe that Putin (once KGB always KGB) has something that would be incredibly damaging to Trump and uses that as leverage.
Aralski (@aralski.bsky.social) reply parent
Trump got played by Putin. Thankfully the likes of Macron, Starmer, Merz, are considerably more streetwise and won't kowtow to the murdering bastard.

You might find Philip Roth's 'The Plot Against America' an interesting read. An imaginary America in the late 1930s and early 1940s. It's astonishingly prescient and wonderfully written.

Much like in the US, in the UK it's fashionable (especially in the conservative media) to dump on cities, specifically London. Crime-ridden, declining, etc. etc. All the same shit they say about NYC or DC. Here's Sadiq Khan, mayor of London, saying "fuck off, cities rule."

Aralski (@aralski.bsky.social) reply parent
Removing an asset. Perhaps the plan is for Trump to walk across the tarmac, board Putin's plane, and be whisked away to spend the rest of his days in some tacky Moscow suburb safe in the knowledge that he'll never be tried for being a traitor and a paedophile.
Aralski (@aralski.bsky.social) reply parent
Populist playbook 101 - blame experts / make gullible people mistrust experts. They did the same here in the UK with Brexit. Economics isn't as exact a science as putting a boeing in the air but were the experts right about the hit to the economy as a result of leaving the EU? Sure they were.
Aralski (@aralski.bsky.social) reply parent
Well it's a great city. One of my brothers lived there for about ten years and I have wonderful memories of many things: the Smithsonian, cycling in Rock Creek Park, and hazy ones of Dan's Bar in Adams Morgan. Always felt safe and welcome.

That this deluded, uneducated, uncouth, and ignorant old man is president is a scathing indictment of the US. I lived near NYC as a child in the 70s and have wonderful memories of the country but something has gone terribly wrong over there and I fear it will get worse before it gets better.

As a cycle messenger in London I delivered a parcel to Sharon Osbourne in Maida Vale. It was morning, music coming from a room nearby. Sharon was lovely, as I left I peaked into the other room where Ozzy sat, he took a big swig from a can of Kestrel, looked me in the eye and belched loud and long.

I was a cycle messenger in London and delivered a package to Sean Connery at his flat in Belgravia. It was the opening day of the play Art that he co-produced, he was having a little party and answered the door with a glass of champagne, wearing a black polo neck jumper. He was very nice.
