bean club is kinda like getting a csa from someone who also has a farmers market stall. you're getting the same things at a similar price, but sometimes it's nice to have them surprise you with a box of stuff you didn't pick
Hoyle (@axelhoyle.bsky.social) reply parent
that's rad, i've definitely never gotten one from a csa
Hoyle (@axelhoyle.bsky.social) reply parent
they are admittedly pricier than other dried beans but still very reasonable because after all they are dried beans. and in addition to tasting better they cook way faster because they're fresh whoops sorry i did the rancho gordo stan thing, my bad
Hoyle (@axelhoyle.bsky.social) reply parent
just for the bean club! (which is delightful, we opened ours today and the 5yo made a little house out of the bags and much merriment ensued) otherwise you can totally just order beans from them without a membership, and they're great

although, depressingly, that may have been somewhat underpinned by ethnic homogeneity, and that model may be fraying at the edges now (especially in sweden)

I think the scandis largely do it well. a free market economy but with high taxation and generous provision of social services they also have high social trust and cohesion, but it's hard to know which direction the causation runs (and it's probably a feedback loop)

yeah at this point i'm pretty far out of my depth without knowing how their search is set up. but searching large data sets gets very messy, and the path under the hood for something like "show the following tab" vs "search the text of every post by someone I follow" may be quite different
Hoyle (@axelhoyle.bsky.social) reply parent
I doubt that's true. I don't know their infrastructure well enough to know details, but once you're processing the underlying text you're dealing with a whole different beast
Hoyle (@axelhoyle.bsky.social) reply parent
also there are non-hypothetical examples of this right? there (not enough) places where we say "you cannot drive here", including pedestrianized zones where once you could. there is even a level of arbitrariness to the ban (why this stretch of broadway but not that one), but it's not illiberal
Hoyle (@axelhoyle.bsky.social) reply parent
having written some search code I'm guessing that's a technical resource problem. those are going to be huge data sets to join, especially since some people follow thousands of accounts I also really want that filter and hopefully they'll do it someday, but it will be expensive
