Pointless historical post: Columbus GA is home to one of the few Spanish-American War memorials that I’ve seen. I rode past this one on my bike this morning. Dedicated in 1953. Quite a few of the prominent figures played roles in WWI also (and some in the Civil War).

In a lot of these cases, they aren’t being arrested for their speech but for crimes like trespassing or assault (if they hit people while protesting). I’ve learned to be skeptical about claims that protesters are persecuted for speech.

I think the evidence shows most Americans support sensible and constitutional gun reform. There’s a good chance that the needle will move in Congress post-Trump when voters overwhelmingly kick the GOP to the curb as a result of the growing mess and incompetence.
What can I say? School shootings are bad. My heart and prayers go out to those lost. I am pro-2A but we can and should do things to rein in the violence. At the top of my list is working to keep guns out of the hands of violent criminals and mentally ill.

Not fear as much as the feeling that bio males have an inherent advantage over females (on average). Attitudes may change my point is if Dems make an election issue of something where the country is 80% against them, they will lose. Much better to campaign on things where 80% oppose Republicans.
Dems don’t do any good if they don’t get elected. I think polling shows that Americans are okay with trans living life the way they want but draw a line at letting them compete outside their biological sex. It’s a small issue but one that people feel strongly about.
No deal at the Alaska summit is a good thing, because any deal would mean that Trump gave away the store to Putin.
I’m specifically talking about public opinion.

I think the question is what can we realistically do? Voters gave us the worst case scenario of Trump and 2 GOP houses of Congress. I do see value in peaceful mass protests but violence plays into Trump hands. I’m still hoping courts will hold up.

I agree, but sometimes the letter of the law is enough.
I think they’ll get to it in the case of birthright citizenship. I’m sure it won’t stand, but it will be a different route to get there.
Birthright citizenship is a good example. SCOTUS didn’t back him up but ruled on a narrower basis question about nationwide injunctions.
Some do, but you really have to look at the details of the rulings. And some of the orders don’t include explanations or reasoning. Trump is bending law and pushing boundaries but sometimes his Admin is on the right side of specific questions.

SCOTUS has gotten a lot right in the Trump years, but they’ve also gotten some very big ones very wrong. Still, they’re definitely not a rubber stamp.
I’m opposed to the Texas gerrymander, but I also oppose gerrymanders in general. More states should ban the practice and look to nonpartisan redistricting.
It seems like the difference between moderate and MAGA Republicans these days is they the former fret and hesitate before backing Trump while the latter immediately hop up and salute.
Another not common but great read is Arthur C Clarke’s Rondezvous with Rama about an alien spacecraft that comes through the solar system. Just reread it and am going through the sequels. Last book in the trilogy eerily echoes the present in many ways.
