I say this based on a typical American learning a tiny bit about 2 types of court process in school: 1. the US Supreme Court & its role in constitutional questions 2. criminal trials & due process (again, a little) leaving most of our complicated legal system totally opaque

The NYC subway system is installing new emergency gates (to exit platforms) that are "delayed egress." There's a 15-second (!) delay to open the gate. This seems nutz to me. The main problem I forsee is people panicking and piling up at the door during a smoke condition, fire, or flooding.

lots of state & local government work, but of course by its nature that depends on where you are! there are also consultancies like Ad Hoc & Nava that are really interesting places to onboard to civic tech, & some explicitly civic tech companies. all have pros & cons - my book goes into detail...

NEW RESULT: Democrats have flipped a state Senate in Iowa. This was a seat Trump carried by 11%, but Democratic nominee Catherine Drey has just won it by 10.4%. This is the second legislative flip by Dems in Iowa this year. It also means the GOP loses its supermajority in Iowa’s senate.

I looked at some of those pentagon offers to go work for ICE/CBP. They’re quite bleak. You will basically be assigned to a single detention facility for six months and you’ll help run that pop up jail for ICE. They’re slotted as “logistics” but it’s just running the place.
