2/3 Much of DEM positioning and rhetoric appeals to a narrow segment of the DEM left while alienated significant numbers in of moderate DEMs and independents. This is an electoral liability.
1/3 In a 2-party system, the broad spectrum of political positions and rhetoric tends to narrow to 2 directly opposing sets of core messages. GOP positions and rhetoric, whether the ideas are good or reprehensible, appeal to enough GOP voters to win presidential elections.

Have to disagree. Nixon was humiliated and disgraced (it was a time when that mattered to people). His career was over and he spent much of the rest of his life secluded and politically exiled. Whether Ford’s pardon was appropriate can be debated, but RMN didn’t “get away with” anything.
