Exactly. They don't think that throwing your kid out because they won't stop being queer is "cutting them off for political views." There's an obvious solution from their perspective: stop being queer, go to church, then you're welcome in our family. So they think they're not the ones cutting off.
They absolutely are. It is completely unfair that their sibling or child or nibling doesn't want to be around them when all they can talk about is Q-drops and immigrants eating pets and litter boxes in elementary schools.
As a family therapist who does some small bit of work with "family estrangement" or difficult parent/adult child relationships, I can confidently say that no estranged parent ever thinks they did something to contribute to the estrangement. They are only the victims, ever.
