It's a shame, because they built a good brand and were doing well internationally. If Tesla's board were operating responsibly they'd have removed Elon a couple years ago. Delayed Cybertruck, no new models, and it was clear he wasn't paying attention to the company. But, cult of personality.

@pkrugman.bsky.social made an observation a few days ago that in both crime and economics it's hard to fool people that things are great when the data shows otherwise, but the reverse isn't true: it's easy to use media influence to induce negativity. paulkrugman.substack.com/p/trump-play...

Paul Krugman Paul Krugman Read in the Substack app Open app Trump Plays the Carnage Card Fake crime wave, real power grab Paul Krugman Aug 12, 2025 2,830 681 505 First, some personal news. For those who may not know, I received a great honor this weekend: I have now added “Deranged BUM” to my Substack profile. But enough about me. Let’s move on to the subject of today’s post, Trump’s takeover of Washington, DC, where he has seized control of the city’s police force and sent in the National Guard. Actually, there’s some relationship between Trump’s rage-tweeting about yours truly and his move against the nation’s capital. Ever since that latest weak jobs report, Trump has been frantically trying to convince the American public that the economy is doing great. He is failing, and predictably so. Experience shows that trying to talk up the economy when people don’t perceive it as good never works, even if the data are favorable. It’s even less likely to work when the data actually aren’t good, and calling people who point out economic weakness BUMs isn’t likely to help. On the other hand, telling people things are bad even when they’re actually good can work. This is sometimes true when it comes to the economy. It’s definitely true when we’re talking about crime.

Honestly it's got to the point where the correct thing for tariff-threatened countries to do is ignore these letters. No need to feed the president's ego with a reply or acknowledgement.

FFS THE BAYEUX "TAPESTRY" IS NOT A TAPESTRY. IT'S AN EMBROIDERY. TAPESTRIES ARE WOVEN. THE BAYEUX "TAPESTRY" IS SEWN. IN ABOUT 50 YEARS WE'LL HAVE THE 1000-YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF PEOPLE MAKING THIS ELEMENTARY MISTAKE. SORT IT OUT, PEOPLE. Nor is it from Bayeux. www.theguardian.com/culture/2025...

Parking in New York is really weird. I parked for free on Central Park West for a few days (!) and only had to move my car for the street cleaning schedule. It might be a little different now (and I think the block I parked on has bike lanes now) but it's crazy the city isn't monetizing it.

Weird that the Times even bothered to apologize about their reporting on Saddam's weapons programs in the hype leading to the Iraq War. That war led to some interesting discussions and controversy!

Every reasonably intelligent person understands how spoilers work in the US political system. Creating a new party is further evidence Elon is not very smart.

In the 90s we had this concept called "netiquette" in which, when you got an account that let you use email and newsgroups (there was no web), someone would warn you about how hard it is to communicate online, how easy it is to use the wrong tone, etc. Sadly that onboarding effort never scaled.

The weird thing about real estate being an investment in the U.S. is that news of homes becoming more affordable and prices coming down is reported as bad news. I think this is a fundamental dysfunction of the U.S. economy.

They make it sound like Californians will be able to build houses out of uranium coated with thick layers of flaky asbestos, with no oversight. In reality what's changed is that you can't as easily block housing with dishonest environmental posturing. I can't imagine being in these people's heads.
