It has all the bits you'd most expect to get lost. I have the original key, the owner's manual, the saddlebags. the factory tool kit, even the factory tire pressure gauge. The only pieces I'm missing are the battery cover and the rear trunk that can be swapped for the passenger seat.

Gonna need at a minimum a carb rebuild, front fork seals, brakes, tires, and fluids.

Got an '83 Honda GL650 Silver Wing as a winter project. It's complete and has good compression but doesn't currently run. I suspect the carburetors are full of varnish. Classic "old guy rode it until he decided his riding days were over, then it sat until he moved to a nursing home" situation.

The opening title sequence of that movie is weirdly avant-garde for a heist movie, too. Which is to say it sure was the late 60s. It's a great movie, though, and I feel like the remake really failed to capture the spirit of it.

My impression is they're like upscale posters. You can hang them without framing and they look finished. Prints on wood are a thing for similar reasons. They make especially good triptychs or diptychs because of the lack of visual interruption from a frame.

Newsom has made the choice to appear with right wing figures and attack trans rights. No one forced him. I'm not going to just look away and be thrown under the bus again because someone thinks a different message is more important.
eigenvogel.bsky.social (@eigenvogel.bsky.social) reply parent
It is indeed early. Which is why I'm tired of people on Bluesky acting like Newsom is already the nominee and yelling at me for "enabling Trump" when I criticize him.
eigenvogel.bsky.social (@eigenvogel.bsky.social) reply parent
Well, yes, because Newsom signed stuff into law back before he turned on us. That's the thing about him. He's a weathervane. You can't trust any position he takes.
eigenvogel.bsky.social (@eigenvogel.bsky.social) reply parent
That's where he's headed if he keeps going. And he shows no signs of slowing down; he keeps talking to right-wingers and adopting their positions. I'm worried if we nominate him we'll end up like the UK, where both major parties are transphobic. Fortunately we have other primary contenders.
eigenvogel.bsky.social (@eigenvogel.bsky.social) reply parent
Democracy and the need to take some rights away from trans people. "He's a fighter" is not appealing to me when it's obvious I'm one of the groups he wants to fight.
eigenvogel.bsky.social (@eigenvogel.bsky.social) reply parent
Yes, he did some good stuff back then, before he decided his Presidential campaign would do better if he kicked trans people around.
eigenvogel.bsky.social (@eigenvogel.bsky.social) reply parent
It was something he and Shawn Ryan agreed about on Ryan's podcast. www.erininthemorning.com/p/newsoms-bi...
eigenvogel.bsky.social (@eigenvogel.bsky.social) reply parent
Ever since he decided to run for President he's been veering right to try to distance himself from California's lefty reputation. He used to be pro-trans before he started quashing trans rights bills and paling around with Steve Bannon and Charlie Kirk.
eigenvogel.bsky.social (@eigenvogel.bsky.social) reply parent
He's always campaigning. As a former Californian I can tell you he takes whatever position he thinks will poll best, and claim it's his new set of principles.
eigenvogel.bsky.social (@eigenvogel.bsky.social) reply parent
I don't see evidence Newsom is particularly resonating outside of Bluesky, where people fall in love with anyone who hires a social media team that knows how to meme. I think a bigger question is, "if Newsom is the frontrunner, why does he have to start campaigning so early?" We're three years out.
eigenvogel.bsky.social (@eigenvogel.bsky.social) reply parent
What are you suggesting? Yelling that Trump is a dictator doesn't do anything to stop him either. Words aren't magic.
eigenvogel.bsky.social (@eigenvogel.bsky.social) reply parent
But he didn't stop there. He also said gender affirming care should be limited to people over 25. He's speed running down the slippery slope to the Republican position on this issue.

eigenvogel.bsky.social (@eigenvogel.bsky.social) reply parent
He's not delivering anything. It has to go to a popular vote first. He has very little control over whether it actually happens. Either he asked Kirk for advice or he already agreed with Kirk's transphobic position. I'm not sure which is worse but I know I won't vote for him in the primary.
eigenvogel.bsky.social (@eigenvogel.bsky.social) reply parent
People on Bluesky care about that but average voters clearly don't, or we wouldn't be in this position. Most people only care about how much of their paycheck is going to groceries. I don't like it either but everything points to it being true.
eigenvogel.bsky.social (@eigenvogel.bsky.social) reply parent
My argument is they should run on stuff that resonates with voters. Satisfying people on Bluesky doesn't win elections on its own.
eigenvogel.bsky.social (@eigenvogel.bsky.social) reply parent
If you consider "hiring a social media team to post some dank memes" a form of fighting, maybe. It does seem to have distracted people from how socially conservative he's becoming.
eigenvogel.bsky.social (@eigenvogel.bsky.social) reply parent
I don't see Newsom doing much other than platforming right-wingers on his podcast and hiring a social media team that posts dank memes. Asking Charlie Kirk of all people for advice on trans legislation is abhorrent.
eigenvogel.bsky.social (@eigenvogel.bsky.social) reply parent
Well, they ran on "Trump will be a dictator" in 2024 and they lost. It's clearly not a message that resonated with voters.

I think you're thinking of oxygen tanks, which can be pressure tested and recertified. No one really does that with propane bottles. I think they could in theory but they're just not expensive enough to justify it.

eigenvogel.bsky.social (@eigenvogel.bsky.social) reply parent
Yup. Something that's supposed to be fun for children turned into a cold-hearted optimization problem by adults. That's the problem with adults horning in on stuff meant for kids.

In this case their passion is scalping rare cards for profit.
eigenvogel.bsky.social (@eigenvogel.bsky.social) reply parent
McDonald's in Japan did a promo where you got Pokémon cards with a meal, and had to cancel it because of all the food waste. People were getting the meal just for the cards and throwing the food away.
eigenvogel.bsky.social (@eigenvogel.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm honestly not sure what triggered it.
eigenvogel.bsky.social (@eigenvogel.bsky.social) reply parent
To be fair the adult frenzy around Pokémon cards has gotten utterly out of hand, to the point where casual players can barely get their hands on them anymore.
eigenvogel.bsky.social (@eigenvogel.bsky.social) reply parent
Yup. The malls here have Pokémon Center vending machines and they have to do timed drops for the cards, while mall security stops people from loitering to wait for the next one.
eigenvogel.bsky.social (@eigenvogel.bsky.social) reply parent
It's gotten badly out of hand, and I think that's some of the context for Bob's remarks.
eigenvogel.bsky.social (@eigenvogel.bsky.social) reply parent
It's related to a problem with online video games, which is that a certain subset of players will turn your game into an optimization problem, and the resulting gameplay loop will probably not be fun.
eigenvogel.bsky.social (@eigenvogel.bsky.social) reply parent
I feel like Lego is a little different because it doesn't have the frenzy around it that Pokémon does right now. There are adults buying up whole stores' worth of cards so they can resell the rare ones for a profit. At that point it's no longer fun.
eigenvogel.bsky.social (@eigenvogel.bsky.social) reply parent
That was certainly what I observed in Michigan. It gave lobbyists a lot more power because they were the only ones who stuck around long enough to learn how the system worked.

When it doesn't work people will just say it makes him look weak and that his impeachment filing was "just another strongly worded letter." Dems impeached Trump twice in 2020 and Leftists just mocked them for it.

Yeah, I remember as a kid feeling ambivalent about adulthood because it seemed like adults weren't allowed to do anything fun. Eventually it occurred to me that this was because all the adults I knew were parents, and once you have a kid your life isn't about you anymore.
eigenvogel.bsky.social (@eigenvogel.bsky.social) reply parent
OP's second post, about playing Kirby, seems to imply it's OK to enjoy kids things as long as you temper your enjoyment with an appropriate amount of guilt. As someone who grew up Lutheran, let me be first to say, screw that.
eigenvogel.bsky.social (@eigenvogel.bsky.social) reply parent
I was thinking of things like "Always Sunny in Philadelphia," which in spite of being a comedy is very much not aimed at kids. I think I'd also be pretty disturbed if I found out someone was letting their kid watch "Yellowjackets."
eigenvogel.bsky.social (@eigenvogel.bsky.social) reply parent
That's partly because of US movie rating rules. If you want to avoid the stigma of a G rating you gotta throw in some titties and/or gore.
eigenvogel.bsky.social (@eigenvogel.bsky.social) reply parent
A lot of streaming series (what we used to call "prestige TV") are specifically for adults. Movies seem to be aiming for teens. You don't see as many R rated movies as you used to, because of the limited audience, and studios actively avoid a G rating because only families with kids will show up.
eigenvogel.bsky.social (@eigenvogel.bsky.social) reply parent
It's often just a version of "stop having fun and go do something productive." Everyone needs their butt kicked in that direction now and then but it's easy to overdo it.

Making a drug federally illegal only for certain indications but not others also doesn't really have any precedent. Off-label prescribing is up to the discretion of doctors, and they're regulated by the individual states.
eigenvogel.bsky.social (@eigenvogel.bsky.social) reply parent
So far his only move seems to be to pull federal research funding for stuff that hasn't been made yet, like new mRNA vaccines. I'm not saying he *can't* pull existing drugs, but I'm not aware of him managing to do so yet. The mifepristone saga shows the pitfalls of trying to attempt it.
eigenvogel.bsky.social (@eigenvogel.bsky.social) reply parent
I have yet to see any evidence he's the "establishment favorite" for US President. He was for California governor, but that's a different electorate. And he can't run for that office again. If he were a favorite he probably wouldn't have to start campaigning three years out from the primary.

eigenvogel.bsky.social (@eigenvogel.bsky.social) reply parent
He started with suggesting a sports ban and now wants to ban gender affirming care for everyone under 25. He's speed-running the GOP playbook.

It's apparently impossible for people on Bluesky to stop acting like Gavin "Schrödinger's Transphobe" Newsom is already the nominee, in spite of the fact that no one's going to be voting for almost three frickin' years. It's like none of you have ever seen a candidate peak early and then flame out.

Part of the problem is we took them out of their natural environment. European honeybees aren't native to the US.
eigenvogel.bsky.social (@eigenvogel.bsky.social) reply parent
Honeybees are a species we introduced to the US from Europe for agricultural reasons, because native bees are more selective about what crops they'll pollinate.

I'm sick of the apparently widespread idea that trans people are never allowed to take their own side and vote based on their rights. In 2024 I was told it was "selfish" and I'm getting that same vibe again now. We're tired of being sent to the back of the line.
eigenvogel.bsky.social (@eigenvogel.bsky.social) reply parent
I think it's worth making it clear now, while we still have lots of primary choices, which candidates have positions that are dealbreakers. I don't think it's possible to meaningfully influence Newsom because he has no principles.
